Hey, I got in my truck today and my brake booster is dead. It had been hissing for some time (a few months) and it finally gave up the ghost.
I replaced it in august of last year, and since it's december now, that gives me a lifetime of about 18 months. Does anyone know if this is typical, or did I do something to encourage this? I would rather not have to replace the booster every year and a half.
When I was having brake booster problems they turned out to be the valve that the vacuum line plugs into the back of the brake booster.. Try replacing that, it worked for me. I forget what its called but they sell them in the HELP! section. Good luck.
Where did you buy the booster from? If you bought it from Autozone, Kragen, etc. then there's your problem. Cheap parts don't last very long.
The check valve doesn't usually cause premature failure. It's there to make sure the booster still keeps enough vacuum to stop the vehicle if the engine dies.
Fortunately I had to change this when it was cold outside (<32). When I pushed the brake pedal down, I heard ice crunching. If it hadn't been cold, I don't think I would have found out that water had been leaking into the booster. That stpid little plastic boot that is supposed to act like a gasket is cracked up a little and has been letting water through.
I installed a new booster (that for some reason doesn't come with a new boot) and put some blue gasket goop around the boot on both sides. Hopefully that will keep me from leaking.
