So, this truck I bought with 220k on it has had a very slight noise since I bought it and this noise recently got worse. It's hard to describe, but seems to be almost a clatter. It seems to be coming from the bottom end of the motor or maybe the transmission. Laying on the ground under the truck it's hard to tell but it sounds like the rear of the motor or front of transmission. Using a metal bar against either, I couldn't tell a difference in sound. It's barely audible from above the engine.
Sent the youtube videos to Dad. I don't know why it didn't occur to me, but I think he nailed it. I'll find out for sure when I get back under the truck with some tools. Flexplate seems to be broken, though. And as soon as he mentioned it, I thought, duh! That is what it sounds like!
No, I haven't. It was making a bit of noise when I bought it, but figured I would wait until it got worse to deal with it. It's supposed to be nice tomorrow and Friday, so I'm taking some time off work to pull the transmission back and have a look. Can't detect any movement with the inspection cover removed.
Well, I finally got it all apart. Man, parts of that are a PITA! Anyway, the flexplate looks good. Not sure where to go from here. I can put it all back together. I am going to replace the rear main, since I'm in this far, and maybe the pan gasket if it can be done without much more disassembly. Not sure what to make of the noise, though. I can't imagine the torque converter making noise. What else is there? The starter and ring gear look fine. I'm baffled.
i just had my truck at a ford shop, my truck is making a noise very similar as your, they said its a combination of things but most likely the flexplate making the majority of the noise. i know your feelings, im concerned to if i yank the trans out of the way to find that is not the issue, my head my spin off my shoulders.
i know the timing chain is a bit loose, Ive seen video of it, but from this ultra sound machine they use, its not the prime noisemaker, however in another 30000 miles, it will need attention, they also noticed a few injectors are kinda loud....ive checked my sparks enough to where i can do it in my sleep but Most of this is top end of the engine noise that's not really loud. The loudest part is the bottom end, right by the oil pan and transmission. I had one garage (not ford) tell me something about the cam shaft being compromised. i stated that in a previous post that i have going about my engine noise. ...I not exactly sure why he is thinking camshaft. my engine has no real drive ability issues. ive also thought maybe the exhaust system?? the cat or muffler? a lash adjuster that is echoing to the bottom side of the engine?? im kinda shooting in the dark too, not wanting to threw money at parts that dont need replaced.
i was told two things, one its something called piston slap, where the piston connection is a bit loose, and it would cost a lot of money to fix. the other was a oil pump issue with these trucks where the oil doesn't make it to the top of the engine completely and it would cost a lot of money to fix, they said if i change you change the oil as recommend using the recommended 5w 20 oil, it will be OK.
putting alot of money into a 15 year old truck that gets maybe 3000 miles put on it a year, ill roll the dice and see what happens.
