Hey I was wondering if anyone here can help me figure what is going on with my tranny my truk is a 1988 F-250 XLT lariat 4wd when I drive it I have to let off the gas for it to shift into second I usually stay away from the interstate cause sometimes it will go into 3rd and sometimes it wont the truck was given to me for free but I would like to figure out why the tranny is acting so goofy. it does not slip so I am wondering if it a some ort of shift electrical problem or does it maby need a fluid and filter change
On the back end of the transmission is a transmission modulator. It has (or should have!) a vacuum line connected. Pull the vacuum line off and see if there is fluid in the line. If so, the modulator needs to be replaced. If the line is dry, see if there is vacuum in the line when the engine is running.
Mark would that be the same on an 87 f-250 diesel with a automatic trans. I just got mine today and the thing did not want to shift and when it did it slammed.
