I know there is alot on here about this subject, however i would like some fresh coments.
I have a 79 F150 with a 351M The motor was upgraded with an Edelbrock performer 400 intake, and an Edelbrock 600 CFM carb. The coil is an Accel 40,000V but the Distrubutor looks stock or maybe an A1 Cardone not sure!
It's also equiped with the Duraspark II ignition module.
Everything i described was on the truck when i bought it.
I plan to clean and go through the motor and make any repairs and improvements.
My question is givin the upgrades already in place what is the best coil/distributor combo for my motor?
FYI i've already purchased
Moroso 73225 - Moroso Blue Max Spiral Core Spark Plug Wires.
Motorcraft DBL platinum plugs.
Waiting on this answer as well. Also, did you swap out the cam and timing chain? Might consider that as well as new rockers and springs.
Also, what did it take to get your AC converted and refurbished? A few people have told me I should just ditch mine because it will be more trouble than it is worth, but I think they are just naysayers. Besides, it gets hot in the south. I want AC.
. Stock ignition is plenty for your setup... but an advanceable timing chain setup is worth some power... much more info down in the 335-series engines forum...

Dont have the full scoop on the AC but when I do I'll let you know.

Thanks for the info. The distributor thats in there now looks IMO not too good (the parts are all rusty inside). Would it be in my best intrest to buy a new one? And if so what do you recommend? Sould i replace the Coil too?
I am a big fan of the Duraspark distributor. It is a factory part, will last nearly forever and replacement pieces are available just about anywhere. Any decent shop should be able to rebuild and recurve your distributor. Probably for less $$$ than a quality new distributor.
Try to stay away from the $49 shiny new ones offered on-line. You get what you pay for.
X2 (or 3) on the timing gears and chain change out. That might be the best money you spend on the engine.
I do like to use the MSD 6A series control box in place of the Duraspark module. I have found increased performance, even on a stock engine. The 6AL unit will work, but you are paying for the rev limiter function that a relatively stock engine doesn't need.

Good luck.
The motor was rebuilt befor i bought the truck prior owner told me it was bored .30 over and it looked to me like the chain and gears had been replaced. but how can i tell if it was an upgrade?
Looking at the picture, the gear tips show a fair bit of wear, the chain looks tight, mine was so loose i thought it might have just fallen off soon. But the gears and chain are single roller stock setup, a double roller advanceable kit will really kick it up a notch for your build, and the double roller will last much longer. Good luck
