Ignition upgrade question

1988 f250 7.5 gas auto. 4x4

Does anyone know, can I upgrade my ignition module and coil without upgrading the distributor?

With the EFI system the stock Motorcraft coil is plenty. You'd be lucky to see any real difference with an aftermarket coil.

MSD is junk, so skip the thought, and save your money for the fuel you'll need for the 460. Best bet is quality wires, Autolite or Motorcraft Copper plugs, bump the timing up until she pings and then back it down till she purrs.

I think ACCEL makes a brass contact distributor cap, but it's been a while since I check on just which engines are offered. I know the 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 are offered in brass.

You don't say which engine you are dealing with. On the V8s the rotor turns counterclockwise, so to advance the timing turn the distributor clockwise, to retard the timing turn the distributor counterclockwise.

On the 300 cu. in.(4.9 liter) 6 cylinder engine, the rotor turns clockwise. So to advance the timing turn the distributor counterclockwise, to retard the timing turn the distributor clockwise.
