Hi Everyone,
I have an 1997 Ford E350 Motor home with 130K miles on it. It has the stock E40D Tranny. I also have parts from a 2008 E450. The 2008 has the 5R110W Tranny with only 10K miles on it. Is it possible to swap this newer transmission into my older E350? Will the computer in the old van know how to control this tranny? Any advice appreciated.
I would think '08 tranny is not compatible with your '97 chassis----they're far too different especially if you really do have a E4OD---thought they were all 4R70W's by '97?
Also the ECM and control strategy of the 5R110W are very different by '08.
At any rate you might find a more thorough answer in FTE's Transmissions forums.

The 4R70W was an evolution of the AODE, you're thinking of the 4R100.
The OP is looking at a complete harness and PCM swap if he wants to make this work. And I don't think most of the connectors will match up between those years, so he'd probably have to swap out most everything electrical as well. The 5R110 is a huge upgrade, but I don't think it would be worth the hassle.
If you're dead set on the swap I would procure a donor van that's been wrecked. Be prepared to swap out nearly everything that has a wire attached to it.

Yes, it's possible. Given enough time and money ANYTHING is possible. If you have enough time and can give me enough money I can install ANY engine and ANY transmission you'd like.
The question you should ask is, "Is it practical?" No, it is not. you could buy a brand new van optioned exactly how you would like it for less money than it would cost you to install the 5R110W in an older van.
CLICK HERE for an article I wrote that explains why you won't be able to do this.
Now no one thought to ask the OP what engine he's talking about here. 97's were in transition from the pushrod motors to the mods. So not only do the electronics come into play here but also the bell housing bolt patterns too.

Because this sort of swap has already been described as being highly impractical reasonable people don't need to banter, bicker or otherwise over examine minutia of what might or might not be.

And coming from you, this is no surprise. Sorry I stepped on your skirts again.

Doesn't matter. That's what Kovalsky meant when he said "given enough time and money ANYTHING is possible."
Put another way: If you've got the money; he's got your disease. Got it?
