It depends on the speakers you buy. Before you buy a brand of cheap speakers that you've never heard of before, you better do your research. I'd stick with the more well known name brands. Aftermarket speakers make a world of difference over stock speakers.
I bought 4 Polk Audio 2-ways for my T-100 years ago to replace stock speakers. It was night and day.
Check out Crutchfield. You input your truck info and Crutchfield will display all the speakers that will fit in your truck.
6x8 all around. For a good inexpensive speaker the Pioneer's are a good choice. My fav are the Infinity line. Components in the front and coaxials in the rear. They work better with an amp. Then you're gonna want a sub and on and on.... lol sonicelectronix.com has good deals.
My 02 XL came with just two speakers (front). I went to Walmart, purchased a cheap pair of the correct size speakers and went to work. As I recall they were a three way design and ran about $45. About an hour later I was in bliss. Most fortuneately the needed wires were present in the rear doors and I just needed to modify them to clip onto the new speakers.
On the way home last night I again marveled at how good they sound.
EDIT ADD: I stumbled upon the speakers sales slip, they were only $29.95 and yet still add tremendously.

Reason: Update to correct price
one tip for the door speakers if you are after more bass. the vapor barrier is on the door but not very tight to seal anything. I sued some thin butile tape (didn't spell that right) to seal up all the openings. I borrowed this idea from the European cars that I work on for a living. there doors are sealed and the stereos sound amazing. anyway I did this to my super duty and noticed a rather large difference. it also will keed dust and dirt out of interior better. I am running 6x8 alpine threeway speakers in the doors.
another down fall is lack of power most factory decks are weak, and most aftermarket while better are not going to improve the sound like a good amp will say a 50x4 or something.
Polk DB571. They fit right in and are "efficient" meaning they sound good without an external amplifier. For bass, you really need to look into a subwoofer, then you can turn off the bass to the speakers via the head unit's crossover (say nothing below 100Hz), and they'll sound even better because those little woofers aren't trying to play lower frequencies they're not made to do.
If you end up going with a sub, I just installed an 8" JL W3 microsub and for being such a small sub, it POUNDS. And it was relatively inexpensive IMO $280 with taxes. I kept my factory head unit and door speakers and it sounded really good. Even my wife, who generally tells me im nuts, said it sounded great. My cousin hooked me up with some cheapy Kickers so I threw them in the rears and it helped a bit too.
I didnt want to give up the under seat racks since i use them alot so this was the best option for me within my budget.. sorry about the dirty pics but it is december and melting snow is everywhere
Well for now im not really after bass. Im after better sound quality and the added bass from some good speakers will be a plus. So no sub for now. Can someone school me on the different between a coaxial speaker and the other types. Do i need certain ones? Sorry for seeming so clueless but this is my first ever trip with car audio or any kind of audio for that matter.
