I have a 1997 Ford Ranger standard cab with all stock speakers and head unit even though the head unit is a cd/cassette combo out of a f-150. I want to replace the stock speakers becuz I get a popping sound when i turn the sound up along with bass up. I know its just cause they cant handle that much and that just turnin' everythign down would fix it, but who turns stuff down anymore??Well I want to keep the head unit and not looking to spend alot of money. What I want to know is what is the best replacement speaker??a 3 way or 2 way? or is a combination of both better and if so what goes where???2's in the back and the 3's up front or visa-versa???I saw some pioneer 3 way speakers at walmart for on $55 thought that was a good deal, but I also found some 2 ways for about the same price. Any help on what I should do would be nice...Thank You
IMO, in a regular cab Ranger, you could get by using only the two front door speakers. The output of the rear speakers just get muffled because they fire directly into the seat backs. By using only two speakers, you could get 2 "better" speakers instead of four "lesser" ones. As for what is best, only your ears can be the judge. You may want to go to a store to try some out. Also, check out www.crutchfield.com for a good selection of 5x7"/6x8" speakers.
I am only running two front door speakers (JL Audio comps) in my reg cab Ranger. Here are some pics of my system... http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/621380/3
I find the sound quality of my system to be stunning.
Well the stock speakers sound like the back ones give off more bass than the front, so i dont ant to give that up, i was talking about 2 way speakers or 3 way speakers. The popping comes from the back speakers when i have too much bass in a song or something, i just want to replace them with something that can handle it a lil better without popping. 2 way speakers are different from 3 way of course, so i just wanted to know if 3 ways are more for rear speakers or front speakers, and are 2 way more for rear applications or not.
Well I don't know how much you want to spend, however you probably want to spend some time familorising yourself with a few spaker brands. I would look at JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, Alpine, Infinity ....etc. I know that these are some times a bit expencive, but its better to put some money into speakers then a HU, because a cheep HU will still sound good through better speakers. Well best of luck.
I got 4 sets of the Bostons SL80 for my f150 and they are great. A base responce that woud blow your mind for there size. I have found them on line for about 150 a pair.
P.S. i think that i would only go with 2 way speakers. 3 way sometimes sound musshie.
thanks for the reply, one note that the stock head unit isnt exactly cheap, just not made to put out the big watts, but brand new its $750 just cuz its much better made to last and designed for the truck, how are pioneer and jensen brands. and i've heard something about lightning audio, are they even worth looking at
Stay away from Jensen by any means. Pioneer is good for HU and thats about it. Stay away from Sony, IMO they've gone to total crap, they're past their prime in the car audio world since they came out with "Xplode". Lightning audio isn't bad if you spend money on it. You have to get the lightning series or thunder series or something like that, but you can see LA at Wal-Mart, but that's just the Bolt series, which you need to stay away from. As far as the 2/3-way speaker question goes. You would probably want the 3-way's in the front to give off better stereo imaging, since the back speakers but off the bass, which is a result of the high's being killed by the back of your seats. The 2-way's would be better back there, because they're not necessarily listened to as much for the sound reproduction quality, all you're hearing is muffled bass. If you're gonna look at speakers, GPeck96 listed off some good ones, but I would add, diamond audio, and digital audio, you can find digital audio at thezeb.com, and you can get their specs at digitalaudioinc.com. Good luck
yeah, put the digital audio 6x8's. they will have more than enough bass. i have installed a set of 4x10's in a chevy van once and i actually heard bass from them. also, romer, where did you hear about digital audio? most people in the car audio world haven't as they are relatively new. the shop i go to just started carrying them about 6 months ago and i swear by those things now.
