5.4 cam timing issue
I have a 04 f150 5.4 lariat that is throwing a bank 1 intake cam over retarded code.
Here's a bit of back story. few weeks ago I replaced the timing chains/guides/tensioners/oil pump and the phasers where replace a few weeks prior. this fixed most of the issues it was having at the time. now after getting it back together it runs but still has issues in addition to the code. so I started to troubleshoot it.
Without touching anything, the truck runs ok other than some intermittant problems. the truck will slightly shutter sometimes while trying to hold a speed like on the interstate. let off and get back into it and it goes away. sometimes coming down to a idle like at a red light or in a drive through it idles really rough like it's got a dead cylinder or two. rev it up in N past 2k and everything is fine when it comes back down. it throws the bank 1 over retarded code and get poor MPG (around 12 avg where before it was 13-17).
Now unplug the VCT solenoid on bank 1 and all of those problems go away and it runs fine. MPG drops to 11, slight loss of power up high, and the only code it throws is the solenoid unpluged. swapped the noids, problem stayed with bank 1.
So am now I am figuring that I have the timing off by a tooth on bank one. I would like to avoid removing the front cover again to just retime it. being that I know it's over-retarded, I want to advance it a tooth by just rotating the phaser which brings me to my question.
If I'm standing infront of the truck facing it, which way do I rotate the cam phaser to advance it? clockwise or counter-clockwise?
sorry about the long story to get to such a simple question. Thanks guys.
