Ford had some problems with worn timing chain guides during the first few years of production of the 4.0L SOHC. I'm not sure if the problems were still prevalent by 2002...you might want to do a little research on the issue.
The only other thing that comes to mind is, the PVC hose assembly on some 4.0L SOHCs can develop a leak over time. See: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...01-ranger.html

thanks but it ended up having too much rust - could actually see holes in the bed from underneath. i left it. at closse to 6k they wanted... seems to me it should be less rusty. too bad as it only had 111k miles on the clock.
