Thinking about a 94 Fordzda Branger - timing chains?
I used to run a chain of auto repair shops and was a tech for a long time (but never did 4.0L timing chain/guides). In the past I have watched my techs struggle with the timing chain guide replacement. When do they tend to fail? and is it a mileage thing, or a hydrocarbon/plastic/time thing? I'm wondering if the low mileage of this truck will give me a while before they need to be done, or if it has to do with the hydrocarbons eating the plastic and I might be doing it soon?
Drove it today. It is truly a rust free truck. The frame looked like it had been steam cleaned, but even in the nooks and crannies that they missed, it was surface rust at best. The rockers and wheel wells were pristine. Seriously looked factory-fresh galvanized. The pushbutton 4x4 wouldn't engage and the headliner was sagging, but those are easy fixes.
Trying to come up with a good offering price. KBB and NADA are pretty worthless in the compact truck market these days. These trucks are bringing big bucks around here.
He's asking $4900, but said he would do $4400. I floated $3500 and he said no way. I think I'll let him sit on it and offer $4000 on Monday. What do you think?
