I just purchased an '81 F-100 with the 300 I6 and it has a K&N permanent air filter. I read a link on a post that claims this air filter is supposed to enhance permformance, mileage, etc.. Anybody had any experience with these? Seems like a lot of hassle to clean and oil the thing as opposed to tossing out and replacing a $3.00 Fram, etc.
Also, here goes the "duh" part. How do you get the filter housing apart on my truck. Does it just pull apart, or am I overlooking something really obvious 9newbie, or really just returning to self-maintenance after 20 years as a father-son project).
I just put one in my mustang a little while back. It is supposed to let the engine breathe a little better, and give you a couple of extra horses. They actually work better when they have a little dirt in them. The dirt becomes part of the filter.
They are expensive to buy, I paid ~$50, but they are low maintenance. You should only have to clean it about every 60 or 70 thousand miles, and they are guaranteed for 1,000,000 miles.
I couldn't really tell if it helped power, I didn't put it on a dyno or anything, but I've never heard anything bad about them.
Thanks. I did check out that article and will look into it. After posting, my brother came by and helped show me how to change the filter (he has 92 F150 with I6). Also, enlightend me about K&N type filters on racing motorcycles. Sez they swear by them.
