So the next question is.....

Ok, so I posted a few weeks ago about my CEL being on & getting P0171 & P0174 codes. The only thing that had been done prior to this happening was that I had dropped a permanent air filter (the OEM replacement, not the cone style) in the air box. Suspecting a dirty MAF from a filter that had been over-oiled at the factory, I cleaned the MAF. That solved the problem, until it got cold, then the CEL came back on. After cleaning & reseting a couple of times, I finally put a paper filter back in. So far, no CEL.

My question is, since the permanent air filter allows better air flow, could that, combined with the cold weather, some how cause the truck to run lean? If so, how do I fix it? I hate to think this $50 air filter is worthless in the winter.

Thanks

My opinion of them is that they are worthless in any climate. I had them in two 850 turbo Volvos. They let too much dirt through. I went back to the OEM paper filters. Just an opinion, but if anyone has a 850 Volvo and wants to try them, I'll sell them very cheap.

I have used a K&N for years and have never had a problem with them. I have also added some additional holes in the air box and that seemed to help free up a little HP. The down side is that it is a bit noisy.

Exclamation P0171/P0174 Help!

The CEL came back on a few days ago, same codes, P0171 & P0174.

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause these codes to pop up only when the weather is cold and/or wet?

Originally, the light came on the day after driving through some deep water when the hurricanes rolled through. It came on again when the temperature dropped below freezing. I'm starting to think that maybe it's an electrical problem, since it's only showing up when wet or cold.

Lower intake gaskets and or vaccum leak. Either of these will cause more air to be sucked into the motor causing a 'lean' condition. There are serveral ways to check for them, the most obvious is to look for disconnected hoses.... for the intake gaskets... so a seach on this forum and a lot of posts will come up..... I haven't had this problem so I don't remember what most people are trying. I also run a K&N in my 99 and have not had any problems with it. Keep us up to date on what you find.

Question me too...

I have been trying to run this down for the exact same situation and I'll say that I believe your guess about the K&N flowing high and running lean has been the idea I've had too. This assumes that the computer/maf only has a finite (and somewhat slim) range of self calibration. I don't know if there is a 'recalibration' that the dealer can do via the OEM scanner but the only idea I've had yet is to buy a chip or tuner for the computer and/or a hi-po MAF built to flow (and measure) higher amounts of air.

The thing is, after I figure this out, I'm switching to a set of 1.7 Roller rockers but know that if I'm lean now, I surely will be after that w/o solution...

Thanks and good luck,
da Celt
