I'm very glad to hear your family is no worse for the wear.
Good luck with whatever you end up doing truck wise, but the important thing is your wife and kids are okay.
Totally agree with Russ, and thanks for posting the pictures. They tell quite a story.
Family means everything & I also wish you success finding a new ride. That's one check that would be a pleasure to write, 'specially considering what the last ride saved you.
Duuuuude....Apoc.....you are so screwed now! She's gonna start asking you about different mods she read about just because she's "curious." LOL!
She's still really pissed at me for not buying the iron cross running boards but removing my stock ones anyway. She has trouble getting in and out of the rig now and hates driving it because there isn't a grab bar on the B-pillar on the drivers side to help her. She likes the look of no running boards and when I first took them off she said she really liked the "more off-road look" of it, but now anytime we take the X she mentions that I never got the Iron Cross ones and that it's hard for her to get in... EVERY TIME! We go to the mall, gripe. Come out of the mall, GRIPE. Go to dinner GRIPE, Back in the truck to go home, GRIPE! Guess I'll have to do something about that soon
Back on topic, I have seen 100's of rollovers in my life both from going to insurance auctions, to junk yards, to working on a wrecker when I was younger and damn... in some of those pics it almost looks like she slid off the road and just needs some help getting out. Your family was being watched over that day and if I had children there is no way I would take them out of the house in anything other than the X after seeing that.
a.) First off thanks for all the well wishes, greatly appreciated!
2.) Not sure what the insurance plans are of yet, I imagine its a total loss.
D.) had to bite the bullet and bought a suburban, but a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do. considering a rental would have ran us $700 a week thats not covered by my insurance.
but finding a non-van mode of transport that seats 9 all of us is not all that easy.
You're lucky that it landed on the wheels again. When these things land on the roof, especially if it were a diesel, the roof really caves in. It looks like they could just start this one up and drive it back to the road!
I'm shocked that these rear quarter windows manage to not shatter in a rollover!
SO very glad the entire family made it through safely - and kudos for making sure everybody had on their seat-belt.

The doors AND rear quarter windows sit AGAINST the side of the roof, vs. inset into the roof - where they would provide additional roof support.
The last picture in the 1st post, shows how the roof above the 2 driver-side doors has been caved in just a bit, and the doors appear taller now. Like many things, it can be both good and bad depending on luck, skill, and just circumstances. Zooming in to the head-on shot, it appears the roof is "racked" towards the pass side.
Wife n I hit this one spot of Ice every year, Fortunately I was a cop here and I know of all the rollovers there. People curse swear honk and flip us off every time because I slow to 25MPH for that 1/2 mile stretch. I love my wife and my Ex too much to go for a slide. Even with the best of tires or chains cables studded tires Black Ice will take you for a ride. If you are not ready that ride can be painful. For me I look at my Ex as a large bar of soap on a windy lake.
I am so glad to see it worked out for the family and sorry for the loss on the EX. Someone will be very happy when it hits the wrecking yards.
If nothing else, I am highly impressed by the relatively little amount of damage the rig incurred after a 45mph roll. Even more so that the doors still opened, that's a testament of solid engineering and build. Makes me feel much safer in mine, especially since not long before our rigs were brought into production an Explorer would pancake if gently laid on its roof under its own weight.
A bird in the hand is better than counting chickens. Don't think that you are M1 Abrams Tank. The Ford Excursion has plenty of documented history of performing very poorly in rollover accidents. I drive one and know it. Some have told me not to rollover if I don't want to get crushed. Great advice, just don't get into an accident.
