I just purchased a 05 F150 5.4l 3V 122k miles seen the valve covers had been off because I could see the silicone and dealer told me the cam phasers and timing chain was replaced. Shortly after the purchase it started to miss or rough idle as soon as I started it. I had the plugs and coils replaced (with motorcraft) and it was running the same as it was before the mechanic said it was throwing the P0300 code multi cyl misfire. I was advised to take it to the dealer for a 150$ diagnostic. I took it to the dealer and was told ignition was good, compression was good, and the injectors were good, tech said he monitored the pids and had whole left bank misfire and found VCTADV error on bank 1. He recommend VCT phasers and timing chain tensioners... 17hrs of labor!! Now I took it to a local ford master mechanic and am being told that the motor is ruined and it needs a new one @ $4800. Mechanic stated that if these motors get low oil pressure then they are ruined?? Any ideas or help? Truck runs great other than the miss it seems to be real quiet to! Thanks in advance
I am having the same problem, no one seems to have an answer. My vehicle runs very smooth until it heats up, then the problems start, lacks power, noise, and unstable idle.
First you need to check the crankshaft endplay. There have been issues with the thrust bearing wearing wearing out allowing the crank to walk. It is mostly on 2007 engines but check it anyway to make sure. Then check the oil pressure at hot idle with a mechanical gauge. The dash gauge is not accurate. You should have at least 20 psi oil pressure. If both of those are good then you can try the updated VCT solenoids in my signature. They have been updated to help with the noise.

OK this is scary, because I've bought my 2006 F150 brand new 9 years ago, and every once in a blue moon it won't crank, so I wait a few seconds and it'll crank after a slight struggle, and my dash always says "low oil pressure" when this happens. It never has failed me or left me stranded, and it doesn't happen a lot, but it's done it since I bought the truck. Now I'm having other issues such as a misfire, and rough idling, and I'm wondering if this is all because of the sporadic low oil pressure reading I get sometimes.
I know this is old but my 04 5.2 3v is starting to do the same thing.. Takes some time to crank... Turn it off back on .. let it "ding" through .. then try again .. she starts .. get the "low oil pressure" message but she runs fine after that. Oil level is fine, oil changes ever 3/5k since birth. Did you ever figure anything out sharp? oh .. has 175k on her... Should I take her to Ford for a diag reading overhaul?
At 175k on it have you done the timing chains and guides yet? The tensioners have probably blown their seals and not working properly. Also the plastic chain guides are probably broken and when that happens the little plastic pieces can get caught up in the oil pickup screen reducing oil pressure.
ah nope - and after watching the videos out here on this subject .. i'd need a good mechanic to tackle that job... I'd sure like to try or at least help doing it. It seems like it would be a nice learning tool to have..
It's really not that hard. The hardest part is dropping the oil pan to clean out the plastic pieces that may have gotten in there if you have a 4x4 because you have to drop the axle.
