Driver's side of the Jeep is back on the ground. Just by watching the lateral movement of the body - it appears that we're on the right track. Two control arms, one bushing, and a track bar left to go. Hey that almost sounds like a line from the 12 days of Jeepmas....
Almost done with my Dr. Pepper and I'm back to work.
Yup, that's definitely an issue. I think you have the culprit.
Sad thing is that that control arm was replaced a couple of years ago with a no-name brand arm. It had to be a defective bushing because I would hate to think that someone else he had work on it helped it along...
dave looks like that thing has a bit of the salty road rot.. but you look like you have things going your way with it finally..
I did a heater core in ole rip awhile back this fall. crappy old ford parts!! only 43 years and the dang thing went out. I hope this one lasts longer.. I had to remove my under dash A/C unit and still haven't reinstalled it yet. i guess it can wait a few months..
alan sometimes it is a good thing deals fall through.. you need another project about as much as I do..
LOL - it does have a little body cancer on it, but it's not supposed to be a show queen. His boy is about to start driving and will probably inherit it when he gets his license if I can keep it running that long.
He's coming over Wednesday or Thursday to help me finish it up unless I putter around with it and beat him to it. I took this week off so it could happen. Once its finished, the '87 is backed in for the rear axle swap.

If you put in a new aluminum one they don't seem to hold up to electrolysis or dirty coolant as well as the old brass or copper units did. So keeping fresh coolant becomes more important to heater core life expectancy. 43 years is impressive. The saying "they just don't make them like they use to" comes to mind. As much as I hate using or even hearing that saying when it comes to vehicles!
Here you go RC if you want a old brass/copper one. At least for the ol 70 to 79 trucks....according to soem fellow FTE members.
For anyone looking for a brass/copper core Advanced Auto part # 398304 is the correct one. It is also the same core that fits early, 68'ish mustangs. Laurel Mountain Mustang is where I bought mine from.

Dennis Carpenter, Concord, NC also has 1 but they have it listed under C60Z-18476-B, the third digit is "zero" instead of the correct letter "O". (704) 786-8139
$60 for the brass heater core is not bad at all. I believe the aluminum Murray core from O'Reilly is $45 for that 97. I would just be leary of using any make/model coolant with brass. I've heard of radiator shops refusing to warranty them unless conventional green coolant is used. They said the OAT and HOAT formulations can eat away the solder. I don't know if that's true but I would just use the old formula green and sleep well at night.
When I swapped out the core on the '87, nothing seemed out of place until I tried to remove it. The top and bottom tanks had bulged just a bit making it a royal pain to remove but the new one slid right in. It looked as though the leak was where the tubes were entering the tanks rather than at a seam. Since the previous owner had put a shiny new radiator in, I wonder if the coolant mixture was weak at some point and some partial freezing occurred thus bulging the tanks. Who knows?
I do know that the mix is reading correct for further cold weather now so I'm safe.
That's one thing I always do is go around and make sure the coolant is good in all the trucks. Such a cheap thing to do verses replacing an engine, radiator or heater core. ....or all three!
I'll be off to the shop a little earlier today. Bob's old neighbor Chris is going to work on his PT cruiser at my shop today. I told him I didn't have anything pressing going on, so he could get out of the cold and use the shop to do some hub bearings. That way if he runs into a problem, we have everything we need to help him out.
While he's doing that, I'm going to tinker around with the Thunderstang and see if I can get the cowl figured out and welded in.
good morning Missouri.. I just stepped outside and from the frost I can see I can tell I wont be doing much today.... might be a good day to go for a ride or something..
