What's a good header for a 300 i6? It's on my '79 so it's carbureted, and I want a header that's going to help me out when I'm towing heavy loads. Anyone have any good experience ?
With the carb heat, it helps atomize the fuel. one of those links will help describe better.
I heard that the aftermarket cast iron headers are not that much better than OEM, but you can still use the walker y-pipe.
Are you running the EFI from the '90? or using an after market EFI, like MegaSquirt or VEMS?
I'm running VEMS as the early EFI'd 4.9l's are batch fire injection where 2 sets of 3 injectors fire at a time. so about 2/3'rds of the fuel is wasted and is probably why Ford uses air injection into the catalytic converter to burn the extra fuel.

It's not efi, good old carb! Someone along the road put a 300 i6, 5 speed tranny, and dana axels 8lug in my truck BEFORE I bought it. I am young and have limited (but growing rapidly) knowledge of these old trucks. I just figured out what year all these parts were from, 1992+ ish. I'm looking to make this truck my tow truck for camping. It's my daily driver now (I have
A 2010 f150, this is just more fun). So I want to put a new intake and exhaust on it so when I tow my 8000lbs trailer at 4000 rpm the engine can breathe and exhale, so to say. I'm from alberta; I don't care about fuel ecnomy. Sorry for the rant, but this should explain my needs.. Haha
The only problem I can see is that Ford uses a fast burn cylinder head with the EFI'd engines. Not sure if it a problem running a carb with it, and the major different if the ignition advance maps. run an efi computer on a carb head will cause it to ping like mad (although it does have a knock sensor). not sure about the other way around.
Also, the EFI block is slightly different, take note of the fuel pump location and Knock sensor just right of fuel pump and the dipstick pokes into the block vs in the pan:
and the rest of my album where you can see the efi ford headers and walker y-pipe (with WBO2 from a VW beatle)
As for towing a trailer, Ford used these engines in the heavy duty F500-ish with a forged crank and different exhaust header. So, should handle what you throw at it (depending of gears I suppose)
anyway, check out some of the posts on the big block forum about various carbs and intakes, or even locate a '96 4.9L for it's EFI at a junkyard to gain it's Mass Airflow Sensor and OBDII setup.
Was doing my kijiji run thru and came across the following. Kijiji ad# 1036789258 new hedman header for 4.9 inline 6 with all hardware $150 ph# 4039191218. It's new still has box and hardware, looks like a 1 piece header with 2 collectors. Dont know if your still looking for a header but heres 1 at a decent price looks like he's in the Varsity heights, university area.

That's awesome, thanks man. Do you happen to know if I need a specific model to fit a 4x4?
Do a parts search on a site like summits catalogue. Whenever I go looking for parts I go online to find my part referrence # the I relook using the part #, be amazed what parts cross over to other motors or drive trains.
