Most people use Restore and then Restore plus, prior to replacing an oil cooler. If you're not replacing the oil cooler, and are just flushing, don't use any chemicals. In that case, you can flush a few times with tap water, followed by several distilled water flushes.
For Restore...Try Wolfe truck parts. They're in Clearwater.
Yes they work ok there are some cleaners a little stronger but the ting to remember is they are all kind of caustic so I really would not leave them in ther too long.
That said I have seen many posters say they run it in the truck for several days.
A word of caution do your flush with the old oil cooler in place then throw away when done. Often you break a lot of stuff loose and can plug up a new oil cooler almost right away. Use of a coolant filter is recomended as well.
Just bought the truck...
Installed new radiator and oil cooler plus the sinister coolant filter. Bought 4 gallons of the cat1 coolant and want all that old ford gold out. Was thinking about just a distilled water flush. I've already pulled the thermostat as I'm replacing that with a mishimoto as well, it just hadn't got here yet. Would running it without a thermostat with straight distilled water help? Or am I just doing over kill?
Many many changes of distiller water, including pulling the block plugs and havering the thermostat out. The ELC has to be full strength cause when you add it there is still several gallons of water in the he system, so when you put the plugs back, thermostat, it will end up 50/50 water and ELC in the end.
So your saying do many flushes.. run it without thermostat for how long? 10 mins?
Then flush and repeat. ..
on the last flush... still pull plugs and drain everything and then still put in full strength?
Sorry to sound like a beginner but haven't been in this motor long.
My f800's are going to feel a little jealous with all this extra care on the powerstroke! Hahahha I feel like now I've been neglecting my fleet trucks...
Thanks for the time and great info!
Ok.. i re - read your post... it was 4 am when I called it quits last night... I get what your saying.
Getting ready to pull the plugs and do some flushes. ..
It's a ~7 gallon system. You only get 3.5-4 gallons out draining the rad and block plugs. So when you do distilled flushes, you end up with nearly 100% water and can only drain about half of it. So you have to add 3.5 gallons of 100% strength coolant and top off the rest of the way with distilled.
