I'm about half way through my oil cooler R&R. I couldn't run my truck too much before doing the work because the EGR cooler was leaking too much and I was afraid of hydrolocking the engine. When I drained the radiator I got about 3 or so gallons out, I'm assuming the rest is in the block? The coolant looked ok, but I want to do a vc9 flush anyway. Would you guys recommend doing the vc9 after the oil cooler R&R? I don't want to plug my new oil cooler. Not that it matters, but I will be installing a coolant filter also.
Thanks!
I read about a guy that flushed after he installed his new cooler. And that one plugged up seemingly right out of the box. He could have just been horribly unlucky. But who knows, I wouldn't vc9 after the new ones in. But that's just me.

...but sometimes you don't have a choice!
My EGR cooler also failed and so I had to do the same thing. First you replace the failed cooler and then you flush. I used two bottles of VC-9 and the first flush was black, I lost count of the number of tap water flushes. Finally I had a flush that was light yellow and I did the last flush with distilled water. The distilled water drain was clear. I did add a coolant filter so the amount of crap in it should indicate what might be in the new engine cooler. I should mention that it was only color that came out of the radiator and not sand or chunks.
I filled with 3.5 gallons of Cat ELC and topped up with distilled water because it was a little cheaper than Rotella ELC. Also the Rotella was only sold by the case, Cat let me buy four gallons. Undiluted ELC took a little work to find, most places only sold the pre-mixed, including International.
I suppose you could replace the EGR cooler, flush and then replace the engine cooler but that sounds like a lot of work!
I think I still have the bottles in the garage, I'll read the fine print when I get home, if there is any!
**I must have thrown the empties out last week when I was cleaning up.
Anyone else have a bottle to see what type of acid is in VC-9?

From the MSDS below:-PHOSPHONIC ACID

Reason: Update
I think I might hold off on the vc9 flush, its getting a bit cold outside to be playing with water. I think I'll top it off with 50/50 Ford, add the coolant filter and flush in the spring.
Here is the MSDS sheet link http://fcsdchemicalsandlubricants.co...us181632us.pdf
it can tell you lots about what is in it and what to do and not to do
one of the main things i read in it is keep it away from caustics and bleach.

the two main things to remember about vc-9, don't leave it in the system to long and be sure to flush every last drop (or as close as possible) of it out when you are finished.
