prior to replacing oil cooler....

im going to have to go ahead and do my oil cooler... my deltas are driving me crazy seeing damn near 30 deg differences... id like to know the best things to do before doing it... i just did my oil about 1000 miles ago so i am thinking maybe on my next oil change ill bite the bullet....
coolant filter i understand would be a good idea before doing it...
and a good flush...any info on a great way to do the flush to get the most stuff out of there...
has anyone taken out their radiator and had it boiled at the radiator shops to get out what may be caked up in there? i really dont wanna have to do this twice
thanks a ton guys!!!

Yes add that coolant filter the longer you filter before the Change the bETTER

I spent a Day flushing before I took it apart to change that oil cooler

actualy I flushed really good VC-9 and pulled thermostat out and ran at 1100rpm while the cleaner was in there for an hour parked in driveway after cleaners I took apart at every hose connect ran the hose threw it pulled block drains everything spent 6-8hours that day

I tried it Both ways with thermostat in driving all over (this way SUCKS) I couldnt get it to flush Clear and I gave it a good try atleast 15 water flushes and still dirty

Then I did the flush with the thermostat Out and with VC-9 set to 1100rpm in park sitting driveway this seemed to work the best as it flushed clear after the 4-5 time flushed with water. The High flow of cleaners and water really cleaned GOOD and it did get to 150* at 1100rpm in park Best way I found and my system was very dirty and it flushed clear I mean as clear going in as coming back out

Put all back together filled it up with coolant and put a coolant filter on it. drove for 3k-4k and then went the Flushing rounds Again VC-9 the works all over but this time after the flush I tore it down and EGR Deleate and New Oil Cooler OEM

Same Boat as you didnt want to have the oil cooler plug anytime soon again so I flushed every angle or way I could think of

Now 15K on new oil cooler and I have a 4-6* spreadmaybe 8* when it gets really hot out.and only 2-4*spread during winter. If I climb a hill and it goes up it comes down fast after I reach the Top so all the flushing seemed to of paid off

as far as the radiator some folks have had a really hard time cleaning it. some report like a Ash flakes coming out of it.

Some have been contaminated enough to the point replacement has been required

Mine wasnt like that so IDK what to say there might just have to wait till you see whats in there

Steelhead was one of the guys that had that Bad Radiator contamination might ask him what he did to fix it. I remember it clogged his new Oil cooler. It might have been from the water he used to flush IDK for shure just a few had a issue but it seems very Rare Problem

The first thing you should is to get rid of the maximun of crap from your entire system. Either you have to change the oil cooler after or not, you have to cure the problem, debris, flakes, rust and gold coolant fall out.

Flush and backflush everything independently, rad, heater, oil cooler, degas bottle, engine with driver side plug remove and block heater remove on passenger side. Just let run water in, out, up, down, reverse, foward. When you flush, jerk the water line so you move things inside. Also check what comes out in a bucket, let stand and look if there is crap at the botom of the bucket, flush until you almost find nothing in the bucket. When you flush the rad, do it by removing the big bottom hose, block off with your hand, let fill and let go, woossshh in a bucket, check what comes out. The little drain tube on the rad will not get rid of crap.

Then I would install a filter, then replace filters every 500 miles, 1000 miles, 2000 miles, until you notice very little crap in it. Just open it, cut it, spread the filter paper.

You would then eliminate the possibility of plugging the new cooler or if you are lucky, might get better delta.

From my experience, I think it depends how long it has been creeping to high delta. Mine went up right after coolant replace. I did not flush really good, did not backflush, did not remove the bottom hose, so I ended up with a bad spread. I guess I just disturbed the crap and it started to clog the oil cooler. I had 20 to 30 spread. So I think I did not have any goo sticking in the cooler, just loose crap. I backflushed a couple times and it is now good, delta is 4 to 8, for 3000 miles. I did not have to replace the cooler,.... yet.....

The worst was my radiator, there has been flakes still comming out after flush, backflush for days. I finaly had to change the rad because of leak at the plastic cap junction. I also had quite a bit of rust comming out on the first filter change, on the third, found almost nothing after 2000 miles. Cleaning the rad is pretty hard, I asked the rad shop and he said he could try, but he charges over 100 dollars. I think the leaking rad came from over cleaning with almost pure cleaner, I was going crazy seeing the flakes comming out. I did the rad flush with a little pump I had and ran fluid in a closed circuit. When it leaked, the rad shop said he could try to reclip it but i decided to go with a bullet proof rad.

For the oil cooler backflush, i did jerk the water hose quite a bit and every time their was greenish little ***** comming out along with other dirt. I backflushed the oil cooler twice for a few hours after running for a couple hundred miles. Backflush only from the little cap behind the oil cooler, I do not think backflushing from the EGR to degass bottle hose provide good backflush.

Good luck, I took all this info from guys on this forum, do not hesitate to ask.

I couldnt get my radiator clean. I flushed it for 8 hours straight, no lie, and kept getting scale flakes out of it. Ended up changing it, but Its what plugged my new oil cooler. I did the backflush trick and my spreads have been 5-9* for awhile now. As far as boiling it they cant, plastic tanks wouldnt like it. Tousley quoted me 200 for a new one, but shipping wouldve killed me, so my local dealer sold me one for 289. My advice would be before you do any flushing isolate the radiator and flush it first. Fill the top and pull the bottom hose and drain it into a clean pan so you can see what you get out of it. If you see flakes stop, pull it out, and get a new radiator.

Yep, isolate that radiator to flush so no crap goes back somewhere else. Like you say steelhead, the crap never stopped, there was much less at the end but there was allways something. My Dealer wanted $575.00 tax included for a new rad., a jobber wanted 400, so I said no way hosey, i ordered one from Bullet proof and it cost me $500.00. shipping included.

I switched to Rotella ELC red, I do not think the scale will ever come back.

I went to delo elc and so far so good. But like you said it got better toward the end of flushing, but never gone. 575 for a radiator from your dealer?, damn, my dealer matched the price that performance radiator quoted me.
