If any of you remember my issue with the 4x4 on my truck, the gremlin is still playing with me, but he's getting to be more of an a** pain. Truck is a 2002 f350 equipped with ESOF. It will not go into 4 low, but will go in and out of 4hi as it should when directed. I've checked the fuses and relays, they are good. Put on new shift motor, still have the issue. Dealer said that gem was corroded. I had them replace the gem and fuse box, but it didn't fix the problem. Checked the switch and it was good. Brake pedal sensor works because it kills the cruise control with a slight touch. Trans range sensor works cause it only starts in park or neutral.
Ready for the kicker? The truck will go into 4hi on its own at random times with no input from the switch. I'm currently driving around in 4 hi (manual hubs unlocked) just to keep it from jumping into 4x4 when I'm driving. Any ideas? I'm thinking 4x4 module (behind glove box) but I don't want to throw any more money at it until I know what the problem is.
Finally got a hold of a test light. Truck does not attempt to go into 4 low. Signs to me are pointing to the 4x4 module itself. Corrosion might have gotten to it I guess. Any body have any thoughts?
As a practical matter check all the associated weather paks or connectors for moisture or corrosion and clean them out well regardless. Many goofy electrical problems are associated with this kind of problem and it often works. Doesn't cost anything either.
