Tested my 4X4 a couple months ago, everything worked fine. Get down to the beach in Mexico, no 4LO. 4HI works great, when I switch to 4LO it just stays in 4HI and the LOW RANGE lamp does not illuminate. I have ESOF.
Have been too busy to look at it but planning on it this weekend. Any ideas right off the bat? Can AE see the 4X4 module? I have the FSM and will begin with the pinpoint tests, but just wanted to put this out ahead of time in case anyone who has worked on the 4X4 has any pointers. I am figuring it is electrical, ie the switch, wiring, fuse or shift motor. I have never worked on the shift motors and will have to read up on how they work.
Yes, I always do it that way, I am familiar with the procedure. It just stopped working.
just thought i'd make sure.
don't hold me to this but, I think I remember reading something about a relay out under the hood that controls the 4x4 stuff. could be a good place to start.
AE will read the system, but I don't know how well it troubleshoots. Put a meter on the two leads to the motor on the transfer case. Operate in and out of 4X4 LO. If the power switches between +12V and -12V, then it's the motor or mechanical. If not, then it's electrical.

Not necessarily ...
If the shifter motor is getting weak but still functioning for 4hi
On Motorbug... i get 4hi with no problems.
As soon as i try 4low i hear the motor clunk, low range never comes on... and after the clunk the 4x4 light goes out... and the front ds is in neutral.
ae does see tc codes but ill have to get them

The point I was "driving" at here was if the motor is getting the forward/reverse voltages when switching back and forth between hi/low... then the electrical is doing all it can. If the voltages are not there in both directions, then the first focus would be electrical. I'm just trying to break the troubleshooting into electrical or mechanical. A bad motor would fall under the heading "mechanical".
I have goodluck getting the ESOF trucks to get 4LO by shifting at a slow roll. I put i in neutral, truck rolling ever so slightly, shift from 4HI to 4LO.
