Fuel gage vs computer

I just bought a used 2004 F-350, 4x4, crew cab, short bed, 6.0L diesel. I'm having a WTF moment on fuel. Gage indicates just under 1/4 of a tank of diesel but the on-board computer is flashing like crazy stating 5 miles to empty, what the hell is that all about?

Others will chime in with helpful experiences, but fwiw on my 2000 350 DRW the miles to empty got real iffy the closer it got to empty. (my others have not had the trip computer stuff)

Down to 1/4 tank it was always fairly consistent but under that it rapidly changed.

For instance, it might say "35 miles to empty" and then after driving 3 miles it would say "20 miles to empty." I never ever trusted the computer as I neared the end of a tank, but the needle never failed me.
