I really wanted one of those tailgates with the stamped "Superduty" across the bottom. I looked at one, and it didn't fit the profile of my tail lights.
Over the summer I threw a new one on from MBI auto who sells through ebay. Painted with factory paint and clearcoat etc. all hardware installed without emblems.....shipped to my door for $415. Looks great, packaged really well.....only thing is if you want to swap your lock into it there will be some work but other than that, direct replacement.
The 2008+ ones with the "Super Duty" on the bottom look cool but cost a bundle unless you happen to score a rare deal.
Me, I needed a friggin tailgate pronto and didn't have time to screw around.
99-07 Tailgates mount right up. 08+ tailgates require driver's side mounts from a current truck in order to fit.
I put one from a newer truck on mine a few years ago. Now I need another since I've had a second POS rental trailer pop off the ball and slam into the back of the truck.
I have one on my truck from a '13 with the Super Duty stamped in it. Best part about is the spring loaded action....you can lower and raise it with a finger. At least the P.O. told me it is spring loaded. I believed it based on how light it is.
Thanks for the feedback fellas - very helpful. I'm just keeping my on on the local Craigslist. I saw the ones on Ebay, but it seems a lot of them get removed for 5er installs and I'm hoping for a real Ford unit.
I found one (Craigslist) fairly close that look perfect in the photo. It has the SUPER DUTY embossed along the bottom and the add says it has a step as well. It also says "F250/F350/F450 Tailgate Fixed 1999-2004" - something's not adding up.
I found mine on CL for a good deal. Didn't cost much to have repainted either. For the lock you can remove the cylinder and take it to a local lock smith where they should be able to key match it for you. I would also recommend something for keeping it in place. I am using the MCgard tailgate lock but I am sure a hose clamp or t bolt clamp would work the same for less.
As Tugly mentioned the 08+ does bow slightly which the newer tail lights mask.
