Brake Smell?

Did my 1st brake job on my 2006 F-150 (5.4L XLT 4WD). I wasn't having issues - just PM. Installed Wagner Thermo-quiets. Everything went well. Super easy EXCEPT when my wife came back from the store there was a mild brake smell from the LF and both front wheels were warm. Rears were cool and no smell. I will put it back up this evening to take a look but is there something common or obvious that I overlooked?

I agree you need to look at them. Clearly sounds like they are rubbing. I only do brakes on my classic cars and had that happen when the pistons did not compress all the way into the caliper. Never did brakes on a truck.

Posted in the wrong forum (2009 - 2014 F150 Discuss the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Ford F150).

Should be (have been)...
2004 - 2008 F150 - 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Ford F150's with 5.4 V8, 4.6 V8 or 4.2 V6 engine
Possible causes ...
  • slides not lub'ed and/or are sticking.
  • brake hoses are twisted, crimped, or weak.
  • calipers are not releasing.
  • you did a pad slap without refinishing the rotors.
  • the pads weren't properly burnished.
    etc., etc., etc..

Make sure it is properly bedded and have not glazed over. Also see the rotor for blue or blueish gold color, if so it is overheated.

After you look at it and if you find nothing give them a chance to break in. I like new rotors myself and usually find many egg shell cracks to give me a reason along with does the rotor catch my finger nail with wear. If it/the rotors gives me the feeling of wear I put new on.

Copied to the 2004-2008 forum.

i had the same problem with the thermo quiet's once when i tried to re-use the factory shims (on a subaru)

once i dug them out of the trash i saw that the directions clearly state not to use them with shims.

saving that, your caliper pistons may not be bottomed out all the way, causing the pads to drag. if that were the case, a new caliper would be the most expedient fix.

good luck!

Update

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum. Yes it was a Pad Slap. Disk size was good, no scoring, glazing, bluing etc. Burnishing the pads? Not sure, I am not aware of the requirement for this. Educate me?

I took a look again last night, everything seems in order. Took another test drive and did not smell brakes nor did the wheels seem warm. Will monitor - might just be bedding the pads in.
