I resently bought (from a Ford Dealer) a 2001 F150 Super Crewcab, 4x4, 5.4L engine w/ 38k miles. My question is that I am seeing (to me) an excessive amount of brake powder on the front wheels. Is this normal for this truck? Do I have cheap pads? Are there conversion kits to upsize the brakes (rotors or calipers or both)?
Karl
Many people dislike the brake dust and there are pads available which claim to reduce it. Personally, I would just wash it off more often. I understand this is also a common complaint for Mercedes. It seems like the brakes that stop best often dust more; not a trade-off I'd make!
PS: I think you can upgrade to the Lightning brakes, but it's very expensive and you might also need the 18" wheels. I put Hawk "Super Duty" pads (carbon ceramic composite) from TireRack on mine and they are very good. Also seem to dust less than the originals, but they do dust.
As your driving down the road, take a look at the other cars. You will find on most, unless just washed, have different color wheels between front and rear. Just brake dust. Every brand of car.
