Opinions on EOT / ECT please

Hi All,

I have just completed a 4300km trip with a 3000kg travel trailer on tow for half of those. Before the trip I changed the coolant.

The truck ran well and the temps on the flat with or without trailer were around ECT 179 EOT 189, sometimes a little lower and sometimes higher but generally the difference was a constant 10 or 11 degrees solid under light load, on the flat.

Interestingly, when the engine started to work a little (climbing hills), the difference between ECT and EOT dropped to between 5 and 8 degrees. As ECT reached 190 they became much closer all. Highest temps were around ECT 210 and EOT 216 and once ECT 223 EOT 231 on a particularly gruelling mountain climb.

I am of the opinion that I need a new thermostat and everything else is good. Am I correct in my assumption? Would it be beneficial to install a coolant filter? Any advice would be appreciated in the quest for me to understand my truck. The truck has done 200,000km and averaged 18.5 (US) mpg without the trailer and 12.5 with trailer.

thanks

What you noticed is not uncommon. My temperature differential drops some when I work the engine harder (but then it rises higher when I let off on the throttle due to reduced coolant circulation). This is indicative of a healthy cooling system IMO. Your differentials look good.

What coolant did you use? Did you see any particles when you drained the old fluid?

Your typical coolant temp of 179 is low by about 10 degrees.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for that, mine does exactly the same. I used G05 ELC silicate free coolant that meets Ford specification WSS-M 97B51-A1. I went for ELC silicate free as I have heard bad things about Ford Gold.

I drained and flushed the system through 5 times with demineralised water and found a few grains of sand in the flushed water. In total, maybe a quarter teaspoon.

I have ordered a new Ford thermostat as I figure that will raise the ECT temp to around 190?

Doesn't really sound like you need a coolant filter, but I will defer to others on that subject (I am glad I have mine even though I do not see anything in it anymore).

Hopefully your new Ford thermostat will do the trick. Many people seem to be getting ones out of the box that do not keep them at the 190 mark. Mine controls this temperature quite fine, but there are a few posts out there about them not - which has led to the threads on the Mishimoto thermostat.

I shall try the new stat, hopefully it will do the trick and await further advice on the coolant filter. Thanks, you put my mind at ease. I am trying to understand more about the truck

I don't run a coolant filter but I think I am in the minority. I did not have any contamination in the coolant when I drained it to do the flush.
