so today i finally picked up my new thermostat for the truck... its been long over due to get a coolant flush since i first got it. so i drained all of the old coolant and filled it up with water and then ran it for a bit and then drained it....
so i went to replace the thermostat and found that i had run the whole winter with out one, it was completely gone. (that explains the heat problem) so i put the new one in re attached all of the hoses good and tight added the new coolant and let it bubble out. all is good right...
then ran over to a friends house to drop some stuff off and pick up a tow bar and on the way there the engine temp got up to 240 ish if i believe the thermostat thats in there. got to friends house parked and it was dripping coolant all over his drive way. checked and every thing was still tight
so filled every thing to the brim with water and got the beast back home running at around 250 to 275 temp wise for about 3/4 of the trip. when i got home and parked it it almost sounded if the oil was boiling. that was not a fun drive home thought i was going to blow it up. when i got home no coolant
I have seen them installed upside down a few times. between 250 and 275, I do belive I would have shut it down immediately. Running hot does not usually hurt if you are not loosing coolant, but if it is boiling the coolant out, it can get serious quick.
What shape and what pressure is your rad cap.
I have parts in mine that are not even supposed to be in there.
But my thermostat always comes from Ford.
When Autozone was liquidating their inventory of Motorcraft/Beru ZD 9 glow plugs, I cleaned out the local store at 2.99 and hit another one when they dropped the price to .99 each.
Guess I should have gone up to Fairmont and Morgantown and hit a couple more stores.
yea not really price competition around here anymore.... orielly or ford..... yay monopoly for orielly i guess its not really a competition at all since ford will be higher
i took out the new thermostat and ran it a bit with just water and no thermostat in it and there was no leaking at all...
ran fine heated up a little fast but thats it didn't go over 190
There is no mistaking when the fan clutch locks up.
Sounds like an airplane ready for take off under the hood.
You may need to flush the radiator with a good cleaning product.
With a good clean radiator, there is no way you could get the temp up to 190 with no thermostat installed unless you were really working the engine hard.
On mine, new radiator, the upper hose may be putting 195 degree water into the radiator, but the bottom tank feels cold to the touch.
On a normal driving day, the oil temp and coolant temp will be about the same temp.
When you start working it hard, the oil temps will get higher than the coolant temps because of the piston cooling jets.
Turbo's add heat to the oil as well.
May look at the water pump as well. Does water seem to be circulating? If there is no flow through the engine, the water temp will go up pretty quickly.
