I've been plugging away at this thing for a while, I've been doing some thinking though. Some how I wound up with an 89 that still had the c6 transmission in it. If I want to drive this thing around I think while I'm restoring I should upgrade to an e4od, in other words I'm asking how hard it would be as far as electronics and what can I expect to gain as far as Mpgs and drivability? The c6 in it now would have to be rebuilt anyways, just looking for some advice
ether way I would plan on $2,000 to do, that's if you can find a good used trans for under a grand,
Auto would need, a new converter $300, after market controller $700, different drive shafts, and throttle position sensor. of course the Trans.
Manuel might be cheaper because you don't need a controller, but you would need a clutch and flywheel, drivelines. peddle box, it all depends how lucky you can get at a junkyard.
I would drop a ZF5 in it and go that route, better mileage, reliability and it will pull better.
Incorrect, for every model year with same equipment, an E4OD is rated to out-tow a ZF. My van is rated to tow more than my F350, but the ZF would live longer than the OD in stock form (do a couple of upgrads and have no worries and smooth shifting goodness)
That said, best bang for the buck would be to pick up a cheap donor vehicle that has all the parts you need. Look for one thats wrecked or blown motor and go to town

Virtually no RPM drop between shifting. But, a manual is more fun to drive!
I'd take a 5-speed over an auto anyday
