Has anybody done a C-6 to E4OD conversion? What alls involved? How hard is it?
I was thinking about switching from the 4:11 to 3:54 on my dually but I wanted to see how hard it is to do this!

Reason: misspell
You will need to have a controller for it, and I can't say for sure about the length and output shaft as to whether the length is comparable, and if the yoke is the same.
If I were you I'd add a Gear Vendors on that C6 witch would be the easiest solution, or going to 3.54's. Swapping to a E4OD will require a bunch of useless sensors and electronics, and it be even more of a challenge since the E4OD was never offered behind carbed engines.
E4OD is going to get better fuel mileage than a c6-overdrive combo. The c6 torque converter will have a lot of slip to it(about 200rpm worth). If you can afford the $500+ for the controller and it's wiring, it should not be a bad swap. But you will need to get a upgraded rebuilt tranny to make it all worth it, since the older units(95-down) had some chronic problems.
After weighing the costs and the different options, I found the zf manual 5 speed to be my best option and I went with it. Some people do not like a manual tranny, but it's simple and has the overdrive. I picked up 3 mpg with it compared to my old c6. I paid $1000 for a wrecked donor that had the zf, but I have sold many parts off of it and have gotten it down to the swap costing me about $300.00 or so.
Thanks Dave! I've talked to Baumann, it will cost around $710 for everything besides the Trans & Convertor. I'm going to try to find a used trans to start out & then go with an upgraded one later. Money, if you know what I mean!
I personally want an Automatic rather than a 5 speed!

Do you have any idea how much those gear vendor units are?? And good luck finding a used one. Most everyone always keeps them unless they have some sort of money problem and need cash.

AMEN! I have a friend that has a US Gear unit that he had on his Surburban that he'll practically give to me but US Gear no longer makes them or sell parts for them & I can't find the adaptors to fit my truck so I'm not going to get it. That's why I'm looking at this!
You and me and everyone else is looking for a used c6 gear vendors setup. It would be like winning the lottery. I use Craigspal to search craigslist. I can search the entire US for "gear vendors" at one time. I did that this morning and came up with only a couple ads, and they were all installed in either a truck or camper. Ive tried buying them out of the vehicles but no one wants to do that.

If I could just find the parts to do the swap, I would do it, but I can't seem to find them. I have to admit though I'm also worried about what would happen later on down the road if it went bad! That's why I'm checking this route out.
I would just switch to a 3:54 gear but I still wouldn't really be able to cruise on the interstate!
I managed to pick up a Doug Nash DNE-2 auxilary overdrive for a C6 for $250 a few years back, but an E4OD would be much more user friendly. You would be stuck without a lockup converter and would have to control it manually; but it can be used to split every gear.
I would love to have an E4OD if it wasn't for the high cost of the controller.

The convertor situation is my biggest concern & that's why I'm looking at this route. From the people I've talked to & from what I've read, the convertor won't reach it's full potential with a gear drive. It will slip some when it shouldn't, causing it to use more fuel & that's what I'm trying not to do here.
As I said before I would go with a gear change but for my setup, it still wouldn't help me on the interstate with the speeds there are now. At 55 it would help but not at 65 & 70.
I just lowered this truck & we want to use it for just plain trips & shows when we're done with it, not hauling anything, if we can make it work & with an E40D it would make it possible.
What I would like to find is a rebuildable 96 or 97 core. I have a friend that can rebuild it!
So if anybody out there has a core send me a PM.
I'll get the rest I need from Baumann!
If your friend can rebuild it, he should be able to take any year core, and rebuild it to 95-up spec parts. I have heard the rebuilt units from the Ford dealer are actually not a terrible deal and are all upgraded when rebuilt.

Dave, what you said here is true, from what I've heard.
As far as my friend gos, I had somebody, I can't remember who, tell me that it was best to try & get the newest core, but my buddy told me that when he do's one he puts in all the newest updates!
A good trans rebuilder will keep up on the latest improvements, and always implements them on a rebuild. Even older transmissions that have been out of production for years can have improvements made to them. The newer models with the electronics in them, almost always have upgrades that are available, and they typically don't cost much, if any, more than using the standard items.
One place that you could look for a cheaper controller, would be from a non-powerstroke diesel equipped with the E4OD trans. It didn't have any electronic engine controls, but the trans still needed to operate.

Thanks for telling me that Rogue Wulff, I deal with salvage yards all the time so I'll look for one.
