E4OD Problem, I think.

I think my E4OD transmission is acting up. It shifts "normally" as far as I am concerned through third gear. When shifting into overdrive, it started out by stuttering a bit. This has, progressively, gotten worse. Now, not only does it stutter, but between 50 mph and 59 mph, it feels like something is out of balance. It improves, slightly, at 60 mph. When slowing down, at times you can feel the entire truck pitching and yawing.

If it isn't the transmission, something is out of balance and I can't find it. I don't think it is the engine, I can rev. it while in neutral and everything seems fine.

I'm thinking now may be the time to switch over to a manual transmission rather than rebuilding this one.

But, what do I know, I'm not a mechanic!

How about u joints? Carrier bearing? My first thought was torque converter, but don't quote me on that. Hopefully someone else will chime in soon.

The U joints and Carrier Bearing seem fine. I have examined them visually and tried to move them.

If you didn't remove the driveshaft to check the carrier bearing and ujoints you have no idea if they are good or about to fail. It is impossible to check them with the driveshaft installed in the truck.

OK, but, do the symptoms I've described warrant me taking off the drive shaft to check it out?

Yes it does. If it isn't in the driveshaft I suspect an engine miss. But the driveshaft fits your symptoms better.
