Went to a local u pull it today and snagged some nice parts.... Almost.
First up was a pair of white visors in nice shape, needed to be cleaned but otherwise they were fine. Secondly was a cargo light. First time seeing one of these in the wild, pulled the light, wiring and the switch. Next was one side of interior door panel trim. The aluminum only from around the top portion of the door panel. I found a nice set of window shades in addition to the rest of this. The whole reason I went there was to harvest a complete set of thin side moldings for a short bed.
All in all a good day right? Wrong. When I went to pay for them they could not figure out a price, they looked on ebay and tried to charge me $400 for the damn trim!!! They could not figure out a price, and finally told me they would rather not sell any of it. Three hours in this damn place for them to basically steal me and my wife's labor for pulling parts they will sell on craigslist or ebay.
For anyone that lives in north east Florida, beware of the pull your part on Joe Johns Rd. in Middleburg. A bunch of damned crooks!!!
That sux that they figure there prices by looking on ebay...I always stop by the pay counter in any new P&P before I head into the yard and ask what they charge or do they have a ball part idea on parts.

2x.... For yards that don't post their prices, I'll first stop at the desk and ask the price of what I am looking for. And if I find a part(s) that I didn't expect to find, I'll head back to the desk and get price before I go through the time and effort of pulling it.
Sometimes it's good to make small talk when ya first arrive to gauge the guys' mood. One time at JM Wrecking in Pittsburg, CA, the fat guy behind the counter was apparently having a bad day and tersely replied with unreasonable prices for a tailgate, steering wheel, and some seat tracks. On other days, he was a real cream puff and made good deals. I don't go there anymore cuz he was so bipolar. Screw 'im.
My go-to place is Pick N Pull.. they post their prices and generally only differentiate btwn car vs truck/van. The only thing "bad" is some of the parts guys/gals will nickel and dime ya.. meaning a "complete axle" doesn't include rotors, calipers, or brackets. A couple of weeks ago I picked a couple of 1/2-ton GM calipers and just cut off the hoses. The cashier was gonna charge me for the hoses!!! Go figure. And if ya want a "grill", get the entire assembly because carrying two grill inserts will get ya billed for each insert. I picked up a nice Dentside grill shell with two mounted inserts and was billed for one "grill" at $35. It is these things I have learned over time.... and am still learning.
I had asked for a price list prior to walking in. They told me they did not have one. I have been there twice before, once they quoted me $100 for a solid rear glass ($75 new at LMC) and once I picked up some nice parts dirt cheap. Regardless, I will not be back.
There is a yard here kind of like that. Used to be a Pick-n-Pull owned yard and they were pretty decent with their classic ford inventory. I got several items for a good deal.
But then they got bought by LKQ and everything went to hell. No longer organized, Trucks are gone, prices went up. It's a useless yard unless you have a late model car.
With all the stunts, lies and other crap that gets pulled here I sincerely think it's easier to buy a $3-500 parts vehicle and use what I need. Then hope like hell the "person" buying parts off of me doesn't come back and rip me off the next night. Come to think of it, I've never actually sold anything to a person from Calgary, the closes customer was from Strathmore (rear slider window) and the furthest was to Parksville (np 435 transmission) on Vancouver Island.
I would have bent the trim over my knee and handed it back to them, but i dont have strong people skills and dont tolerate douchebaggery well
I have reread this replay and think it is funny as ever...hate to see all that work and trim go to waste. But if you did that, the look on the douchebag guy's face would of been priceless.
What an idiot! There's no guarantee the item would sell at all on eBay, much less $400 - I bet he was looking at the listings, not completed auctions - and there are listing fees, and the return problems that sellers face for 180 days now - and the hassle of packaging, insurance, post office, etc.
Guy walks in with cash and the part, make a deal! Some folks just make it their hobby to be a dick.
Yeah, I had a similar experience recently. It seems people are forgetting they're running salvage yards. I found an IDI in a yard down here and wanted to get the hard fuel lines off it that go between the injection pump and injectors. The way the lines are attached to the pump, you have to take the pump off to get to a few of them. Anyway, I took the pump off and decided I'd just take it and the lines.
I go in to pay and they look at me with a puzzled look and ask what the heck that thing is. So I tell them, which still leaves them looking all confused. They take it back to an office and about 10 minutes later come back saying that part is on eBay for $350. This is true, but those are for freshly rebuilt units! I told the guy that and stayed pretty calm and said I would not give more than $70, as this is pretty much an injection pump core, since I have no idea if it's good. I think he realized that I knew what he was up to and that I'm not stupid, so he gave it to me.
I miss pick n' pull, where I could look online and see all of their prices. The one nearby closed, and the rest don't have pricing online.
