junkyards pricing.

This is really a big problem for me. The junkyards over pricing things.
Like today i went for a spare wheel and tire they didnt have any so i just went to look for miscelaneous items. I found a 83 F-150 in GREAT SHAPE it most deffinatly didnt belong there. well the tailgate wouldve been 150. the door panels 50 a piece. grille 50 dollars as well. well hell if i wanted to pay nearly 300 dollars for those parts id buy the whole thing. there are sever problems with that, my parents wouldnt let me, neighborhood association would get mad, no space for me to put it, and i dont have the money for it. So basically i was wondering what the most outragous prices youve ever been told about certain parts at a junkyard.

If you have the time and space, you will always make more selling a vehicle for parts instead of whole. People turn there noses at junkyards and think it is poor stupid people that have these yards. I guarantee these people have $$$$$ socked away. Multiply the prices of that one truck by 200 trucks. They probably didn't even pay for the truck.time, patience, and space = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Here's why the price is what it is.
"...my parents wouldnt let me, neighborhood association would get mad, no space for me to put it, and i dont have the money for it..."
Their parents don't live there, there is no neighborhood assoc., and you are helping them pay for the space.

The junkyard I usually go to always surprises me with how little they want for the parts I am taking. I made the mistake of going to the yard down the street once. They had a rear hatch with spoiler from a mid 80's Trans Am. I just wanted the spoiler but they said I had to buy the whole thing for $300. They refused to separate them and said it would sell better intact. I went back 3 years later and it was still there.

I think my last trip to the junkyard got me cab lights w/harness, factory tach w/circuit paper, near perfect woodgrain cluster and radio bezels for $20. A few times I have come out with some little things and they say "we'll get you next time".

I am blessed with some good yards around here. There are some I avoid because price and service sucked to put it mildly. Check out car-part.com, they show many of your local yards and their prices. It is a good idea to call ahead to be sure their online inventory is correct, as some apparently don't keep it updated in their systems....
