I need to tow a 2001 Excursion 7.3L 4x4 behind a motorcoach. I've found very few examples of this being done, but given the size of my family the Excursion is needed when we travel.
I've primarily seen posts saying your motor home can't pull a tow vehicle as heavy as an Excursion. This coach lists a 15,000lb tow capacity, so I would expect plenty capable of towing an Excursion.
I found a drive shaft disconnect made by REMCO, but would rather see if there is any method to put the Excursion transfer case into neutral instead. In my opinion the idea of putting a quick disconnect on the Excursion drive shaft would introduce a weak point of failure.
I think at one time you could get a kit from Ford to put the transfer case in neutral. You should not flat tow it otherwise from what I have read. I think it is on the owners manual. You should post in the excursion or super duty area.
The only 4x4 I am aware of that Ford said can be towed has to have the manual activation for 4x4, that is the separate shifter on the floor. Nothing with the automatic selection on the dash will do. Check your owner's manual for what it takes to tow. I am sure it is there.
Remco components have good reliability in my experience.
Thanks for the replies. I think I'm leaning towards the drive shaft disconnect after speaking with a tech at a drive shaft specialty shop in Dallas. They claim to have been installing driveshaft disconnects for 30yrs and are very confident in them.
They are close enough for me to drop in on and take a look at how they work first hand. If I decide to get it installed I'll post pictures!
I have a few friends and a family member who have used the REMCO driveshaft disconnect. They work great. About the only thing I've seen happen was the control cable got crudded up on one due to lack of use and had to be replaced. No big deal.
