I need recommendations on headers. I have searched all over the world wide web and have been unable to find a definite answer. My dad and I have been restoring a 74 F250 from the ground up. We have made several of the common modifications/upgrades such as power steering, hp Dana 60 front axle, rear fuel tank from a Bronco II, and several others. I can't find a header that will fit the 390 fe. Sanderson says their headers won't fit vehicles with the sway bar, and many of the other companies also have disclaimers regarding mods. I have used Hooker headers in the past on an 84 F250 with a 460. They were great, but burned up starters quickly. On this project, I wanted headers that hopefully leave a little room around the starter, but I'm now to the point that I hope I can just find headers that will fit. I'm trying to avoid trial and error, and would rather not have to pay shipping to send headers back to the manufacturer. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks
Thanks guys! I am currently reading a rebuild thread on here where the op is asking about header options also. He has a 390 but no sway bar and both of those companies were suggested. I will see what they have. I tried to call Sanderson today, but they are closed for the weekend. Thanks again
From what I have found (or rockittsled suggested), Maddog definitely makes them but they are fender exit. Stan's possibly has one, Doug's part# D603 may fit, and Hooker part# 520-6905 MIGHT work. I need to call all of them next week to be certain. I would rather not chop up my inner fender, but many other issues come into play with chassis headers. I'm not in any kind of hurry yet, we have plenty of bodywork to keep busy for a while.
HIO Silver----This truck doesn't have radius arms, but the sway bar is behind the axle. I'm not sure if it would be in the way or not because it mounts to the underneath side of the frame close to the outer edge. I know pics would help but I dont have any right now and to complicate things further, the truck is in Co and I live in Fl. I also haven't been able to find any good pics online that show a similar setup from behind the front axle.
Update for anybody interested. Stans said that part# 244Y-L should fit. The "L" indicates low because of the cross-member under the bell housing. If a truck doesn't have the cross-member, the 244Y will fit. They also have part #'s that end with a 14 or 16. This is the gauge of pipe. Hooker was not sure if part # 520-6905-1 would fit or not. They didn't have any reference to a sway bar in their tech notes and he said they probably hadn't tested them with one of these axles. Sanderson said part# FF427 would fit with no issues. Hedman doesn't make a header that will fit with the sway bar. I didn't call maddog only because I am pretty sure they will fit, just have to cut the inner-fender. I can't verify any of this info, but that's what their reps claimed. I will probably go with maddog, and will try to post pics after.
I have The Sandersons on my '66. It dumps a little close to the differential but when they went away from the three point engine mounts they raised the engine in the frame so you should be good to go.
thanks 1972 RedNeck and somethingclever, hopefully this thread will help others as well. I really like the sanderson's but wasn't sure if shorties were what I was looking for. I have had hookers in the past and have been pleased with them.
Stan's headers FTW, they definitely have the best fit, but with a HP front things start getting a little tight. Talk to Stan himself, he knows these trucks WELL !!!!
