The ID numbers will be on top of the right frame rail around the area of the front axle. Very hard to see sometimes. These are the numbers, letters that should match the title.
Some 53's have it on the radiator cross member towards the curb side, so if you don't find it where Ray has stated to look (as that's where 90% of them are) Look on the crossmember
not my pic but the little red box shows where to look
The 56's numbers are stamped on top of frame rail in 2 places, above the steering box and between the 2 running board brackets, I would have thought the 53-56 would be the same.
I've had 2 '53 F100s (one was a parts truck) and both were in the location indicated in post #3.
You asked about the body as well. The only place the VIN will be on the body is a tag on the glove box lid. In KY, if they have to verify the S/N on an older vehicle, they will look for the frame number. I don't know how they do it in Arkansas.
Thanks for all the replies. I looked at the truck this afternoon and I wasn't able to see the number on the frame. The frame had been painted but was pretty deeply pitted. Also the inner fenders flare out and cover most of the top of the frame in the engine bay. The number on the glove box tag does match the title. The owner said as far as he knew the cab and frame were originally together. The fellow that he bought it from showed him before and after pics and he only had the one truck.
Thanks again for all the help, Mark
