Is it possible to see these nuts from under the truck? My reason is because I saw a post, don't remember where, that the nuts if the wrong ones could be rubbing/scrapping as the engine is turning. I read in the post they had a rubbing type of sound similar to what I have. I haven't found anything visible on the engine while turning that could be causing it.
Where the bell housing bolts to the engine there is a cover plate. The nuts are right inside this, on the front side of the flexplate. The factory ones are a low profile and have a crimp on the outer side to ensure a positive lock on the studs. Do not replace with hardware store nuts or nylock nuts, the nylon retainer will melt with torque converter heat if it's worked hard.
