Replacing rear drums, pads, wheel cylinders and springs. Just finished up the rears and both tires bind and don’t move when I put the tires on and tighten the lug nuts. They spin free with the drum on and no lug nuts. Any ideas?
Does the drum slide all the way onto the axle? If not, the brake shoes may be wrong. Does the new drum hit the backing plate? What happens when you put the lug nuts on without the wheel?
Next is the rims/tires. Something must be too big & not fitting, or hitting the fender somewhere.
Drum slides all the way to the axel. Same thing happens when I tighten only the lug nuts to the drum. Could it be something with the e brake spreader bar? Because I just did the fronts and they turn just fine.
If the shoes are too far apart by the adjuster, you will not be able to push the drum over the shoes. If you are not sure, collapse the adjuster all the way down & try again.
Something is changing when you put the lug nuts on... either the drum is hitting something behind it or the axle is being pulled out... Or BOTH!
I was thinking the same thing. Better you pull the front drums back off and measure the width of those new shoes. The rear ones might fit the front, but the front would be too wide for the rear. Easy enough to make that mistake.
