limp mode

Last week I got the yellow wrench. I've never seen it before in all the Fords I've owned. Learned from the book I'm now in limp mode and my truck will soon stop working or come close. I dumped it off at the dealer next to my work. After a day they tell me it's my throttle body sensor and how it affects my power. Funny thing is I never lost any power. It ran great. They removed a large amount of money from me and off I went. Two days later it came back on. Truck runs good with no hiccups for 3 days till I give it back to them. As of now the senior tech so I'm told took it home with the laptop connected to see why the limp mode comes on but truck still runs good.

My question being unfamiliar with limp mode is if the truck is running good, what are some other causes of it. I'm ready to argue the whole throttle body and sensor replacement was uncalled for. I didn't see the codes so how do I know for sure it caused it. No difference in performance. I'll find out tomorrow.

Truck is a 2006 V-10 F350 4x4 128000 miles.

Without knowing what error codes are being thrown it is hard to even guess what the problem is. A lot of things will cause limp mode.

I agree with redford. However it sounds like guessing is just what the dealer did and I have seen far too many times in recent years that the dealer prefers to jump to replacing a component in the error code loop rather than truly diagnosing the actual problem.

Since the same thing happened after the $$$ throttle body sensor replacement I would demand that $$$ back unless they can prove it was actually a problem.

I'm no certified technician, but from my experience I know that some codes can be generated by poor electrical connections and nothing more.

I could give you details on 4 costly repairs proposed by dealers (2 Ford, 1 Chevy, 1 Chrysler) which ALL turned out to be poor sensor connection issues.

Caveat Emptor.

Limp mode is usually caused by a malfunction in the cooling system and often a Motorcraft thermostat will cure it. Don't let them keep trying parts and charging you. The stealership is good for that.

Well got the truck back. The tech said he never saw it go into limp mode going home or going to work. They asked if they go for another ride and it still didn't do it. I know it was run because I had it half full and got it back nearly empty. I asked about when it came on when I dropped it off and said it didn't show any code. The only time it showed one was for the TB. So I took it back. They didn't charge me anything.

The comment about the loose connection might be something. I also have a 2009 Grand Cherokee 5.7. Same thing with the light. Parts were thrown at it. It ended up found by a tech who found a bare spot on wire. They ate the cost of the parts.

Guess I'll see what happens. Thanks for the responses.

Limp mode repair

My 2008 F350 diesel would go into limp mode while towing heavy loads. Based on history of codes pulled, checked exhaust gas sensors. One was giving an erratic reading. Replaced all three EGT sensors, no more limping 5000 miles later.
