I have a 2006 V-10. Last year about this time I had the wrench pop on. The truck didn't run any different or had loss of power. I brought it into a dealer near I work after reading it could suddenly go into limp mode. They said it was the throttle body and replaced it. A couple of days later it came on, I dropped it off and they said it didn't come back on or any codes. The next day I dropped it off before they opened and left a message. They drove it around and took it home with a laptop on it. It never came on. Fast forward to last weekend. It came on after a mile of driving. I shut it off to go into a store and a mile later back on. Started it up after work and nothing for a week. I had my tranny flushed last Thurday by a shop I know. He said after test driving it , there was no light. The next day, back on. It shows no signs of running bad. I picked up my new 32ft travel trailer. Pulled it with no problem with the light. Two days after I picked up a rental Track loader skidsteer listed weighing about 10k without the trailer. No problem even up a steep hill. All with the light on. I haven't had a chance to get the codes. The times I tried before showed no code or none stored last year. If not the throttle body and with it running good, what are some of the other causes? I know without the code it's a guess but till I can get it scanned, well i don't like suspense.
You answered your own question. With out a code there isn't much one can do to trouble shoot. Most auto parts stores have a scanner available for rental.
BINGO!
I think this is the best idea. Seems lie some service dept don't
always want to really dig into a problem and they just pass it off
as a sorry "can't make it do it".
This has been happening on the Flex and is on the Flex forums.(some late model F-150s too) Several have taken it to the dealer to find no logged codes and have the intermittent "wrench". So it is possible the shop is not the problem here.
Look at the evap emission system. The solenoid the canister and the pressure switch. Are you having any trouble when filling the tank with gas? Of course the codes will zero it in.
I drove it around for an hour till the wrench appeared. I then drove it to a mechanic I've known and have been to for years. He scanned it and got two codes. I forgot to write then down. He said there are five sensors. 3 on the pedal and two on the throttle body. It showed them on his laptop running. One of the sensors goes out of sync with the other 4. When it goes off enough it throws the wrench on. He said if it really goes off, it will put it in limp mode. At the time they were running in sync idling and revving so he couldn't see which one. He gets the truck Thursday to spend more time to find which one it is.
Glad to hear you nailed some of the codes. I have heard of some issues with the drive by wire system before around your year however it does not seem to be all that common. Ford switched over to the drive by wire system in 2005 on the super duty, before that they just had a throttle cable.
The 6.0 Diesel was running drive by wire before 05.
One thing that will give it a tizzy is loss of the Vref voltage
on one channel or all 3. If that happens it will go into idle.
Much better that going into a run away peddle condition.
(Toyota comes to mind)
I am going through the same issue on my 2007 f250 6.0 King Ranch, with the yellow wrench light. I couldn't pull any codes with the generic hand held scanner that I had. Truck ran fine, but pesky wrench light comes on. I ordered a wireless Bluetooth scanner and downloaded the forscan software on my iPhone/iPad, and hooked it up to my truck. It shows me a set code of p012f, which tells me is a variance between EOT and ECT. I am considering attempting a coolant flush if I can find some step by step procedures, to determine if my engine oil cooler might be getting clogged up.
