I've heard the "we don't get anyone coming back with complaints" rationale for many products of all kinds over the years. I have to wonder if most people would bother, or would just chalk it up to a bad decision and move on. I doubt most would want a new one of the same.
At any rate, Chuck, I can't imagine heading down I-17 from Flagstaff with sloppy steering! Not very forgiving. You're making the right choice.
I'd dare say that its very likely many of these products never get used when they're purchased, that they're purchased as part of a project that never gets off the ground. Kind of a "dream" part if you will.
I know that it is more work, however, I did it the old fashion way getting a junkyard Ford tilt column from a 70's full size and modified it. It gets me good old fashion American quality (there is no play in the tilt!)
The rotational was not that bad but when you combine it with the lateral it does not make for an enjoyable ride. Here is another video that I just made, I don't have a high tech lab just seat of the pants testing. Summit Racing has both the ididit and Flaming River in stock and I will make my decision tomorrow at the SEMA show after looking at both. Hopefully the truck will up and running by this weekend and ready for Goodguys the following weekend.
I looked at all of them before I settled in on the flaming river from summit, no slop, nice and tight. Only issue I had was When i ordered it, they said I needed a 30" or 31", that's what everyone uses in these trucks. I measured the Chevy column the the PO had put in and knew I needed a longer one to go with my volore front suspension, they sent me the one they "knew" i needed, guess what too short. I called them, they over nighted the correct one at no charge and of course paid shipping for the return and I got another free hat and a disposable razor to boot been very happy with the column, tilt is nice and tight

The 30"s a pretty common one. I always like to have the motor, driver side exhaust and seat in before I determine the length. The 32 is a little long and if you have to use u-joints it makes for some sharp connections. 30 degree is the recommended max for the angle of u-joint.

.
I had that dilemma after pulling out an Advance Auto throw-out bearing with less than 1,000 miles on it. There was no way that I wanted to pull that transmission again, so I demanded my money back and bought the Timken that I should have bought the first time.
Yesterday was a fun day at the SEMA Show, walked all day, major accomplishment for me. I got to visit with the owner of Ididit, a representitive of Flaming River and several folks from CPP. I did recieve an email from CPP this morning requesting my address and that they are sending me a new column. I am headed back to the show this morning and will post again when I have more time and I get back to Prescott.

Sounds as if those articles are having an effect. Good for CPP to take the proactive attitude. Also a big thanx to Mid-Fifties for their efforts in the matter.

But is there a difference between what Chuck had, and what they're going to send him? Like I said before, I don't know that I'd want another of a product that failed so quickly (particularly for steering).
Good point Ross, but it shows they are confidant in their product to keep putting it out there with the circumstances surrounding them right now. Alot of suggestions out there. i am not pro or con using that column either. If it was me and i had both columns (old and new) I would take them apart and see what I could see beings I am considering a new one anyways. Not saying the op is considering selling the new column, I would for my own pc of mind want to know this before I even considered the thought of selling this column. My first column intended for my panel was a RPC (bought at a swap meet store) but after it being to long I bought the Ididit because it had good reviews, and now the RPC is wall art because in no way could i sell that to anyone.
