So i noticed an as described above, a loud high freq. buzz in the engine compartment. I decided to investigate it a little more the other day and i put my hands on the fuel rail on both the driver and passenger side and could feel it on the passenger side. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I do notice in idle while off throttle the car does not roll smoothly it kind of stumbles maybe? Its not a smooth roll in idle, i hope that makes sense.
I realize your post is several months old, however, I just purchased a Ford F250 Super Duty v10 4WD Super Cab and I noticed the same weird buzzing noise on the passenger side near the fuel rail. I pulled out the big vacuum line going from the manifold to the throttle body...there is a PCV valve attached to the end "EV-233" when I pulled it out the buzzing stopped. Going to go buy one tomorrow. They are around $10 - $15. What a relief. Did you ever figure out what yours was?
JJ, Sandonm,
Did you figure out the noise? Did it come and go? I'm searching for a similar noise passenger side near fuel rail. I thought maybe injector noise? I notice that the engine smooths out when it stops buzzing.
JJ,
Mine was solved by replacing the PCV valve on the vacuum line goin from the manifold to the throttle body. It's was part #EV-233 at NAPA...around $10.
It was pretty constant since it was in a vacuum line however the noise was cause by loose parts floating around in the bad PCV valve. Once I located the noise I could thump it and it would stop for a minute. Below are a couple of pictures of the hose that contains the valve. I hope your "noise" is as easy to fix as mine was. Good luck. -sandon
Ya I know where it is. Thanks for the pics. I just swapped engines in my truck. It did it on my old engine too. I think I might have reused the PCV. Humm got to check that when I get home. Bet that's it. I've had them plug up before but never buzz
Is that a hole in the 90 bend hose there behind the spring in your picture? I had a hole appear in that hose just recently and had to replace it.
Wow, great catch on the possible hole the hose. My truck has been throwing P0174 and P0171 over and over lately. Been told is possibly a bad vacuum line. I sure hope it's something this simple. Thank you for pointing it out. -sandon
That hose is dealer only I think it was about $35.00 it's two pieces the 90 that comes out of the throttle body then there is a splice behind the cable bracket to the hose leading to the PCV
Thank you for info, I will take a closer look at the hose when I get home. Gotta get 'er fixed before i go, soon I am heading Afghanistan for 6 months. -sandon
Thanks for the heads up on the PCV. Put my hand on it last night and sure enough it buzzes then it will stop buzzing for a second and I can hear the idle change. I'll be getting one on the way home tonight.
It was driving me crazy. I was thinking one of the solenoids for the smog or something because it followed over from the original engine so it had to one of the parts I kept. The new engine didn't have EGR so all for that got moved over, but so did the PCV.
What year is your truck? I noticed it is also an EGR engine. I was concerned at first about the different intakes from 99 to 2001 but everything swaps over. I wonder how much of the listed HP for the PI is lost due to the EGR throttle body? The non EGR body is plastic and larger than the intake opening while the EGR unit is smaller.
So did the spacer on the throttle body I see on your truck make any difference?
Afghanistan? Military? Well be safe and watch your six.
Darrell,
Ya that buzz drove me crazy too, glad it will be an easy fix for you as well.
Truck is a 1999 250 Super Duty v10 4wd Super Cab. Hmmm, so the 2001 engine is/was not EGR? Must have had some other way to reduce Nox. Good that you were able to get it to fit, for emmissions testing. There are a couple of really good threads on here about pros and cons of EGR.
The throttle body and K&N intake were already on when I got it so I couldn't tell you if it improved HP. It does run strong. I drove it all the way from Alaska to Texas with close to 2000 lbs load, lots of mountains with ease.
And yessir, US Air Force 24 yrs, I have loved every minute of it but as soon as I get back from Afghanistan I plan punching the retirement button. I will keep my head on swivel over there. -sandon
Yes the 2001 motor was pretty much a straight swap. The knock sensor had a different connector, The fuel rail regulator is orientated different so I had to modify vacuum line, Torque converter is 4 bolt not 6 so I had to swap the flywheel.
Swapped over the wiring harness, vacuum ****, Exhaust manifolds, and throttle body. Oh and the troublesome PCV.
Took me two weekends and a few hours during the week to swap it all out
Runs like a champ and gets a little better mileage. Hoping for another 300K out of it.
