Why, why, why????

I have three of these trucks, a 88 5.0, a 92 5.0 and a 93 4.9. On all three of them the fan belt squeaks constantly. It isn't causing a problem, but it IS annoying.

I haven't seen anything that appears to be out of line, everything looks good. A new belt should fix the problem right? I thought so, but in all three instances they kept right on squeaking.

Anyone else having this problem?

On my '96 F150 4x4 4.9L, the belt squeaks until it's warmed up some. Didn't do it all summer, but now that it's getting colder at night it's squeaking again.

I've heard that the cheaper belts are more inclined to squeak (I don't know for sure). I bought Napa's best one but have yet to put it on.

i have this problem with my 90 with a 5.8. I have tried cheap belts, expensive belts. replaced the tensioner. i have tried belt dressing, running a bar of soap on the belt while engine running. ALL were a very short time fix, couple days. The ONLY thing that works in my case, is spraying the belt with armorall, lasts for months.

On everything but my 460, Goodyear Gatorback belts stop the squeak. They don't make one for my 460 so I have the squeak until it warms up.

My old '92 F350 w/5.8L engine ate Gatorback belts like candy plus they squeeked. After replacing the tensioner with a Motorcraft brand it's appetite was sated but the squeeking persisted. A Gates brand fixed the squeeking.

I got pissed on my 89 F250 squeaking belt and threw a hand full of sand on the inside of the belt ribs while running. Took care of the noise for over a year! Till the upper radiator hose blew and wet it back down...

The pulleys are glazed over and that is causing the noisy belt. Deglaze them and that should help.

Clean all the pulleys good with a scotchbrite pad. I find it's mainly the pulleys that the back of the belt rides on which causes squeaking.

I ended up replacing the idler (squeak stopped for 2 or 3 days), the tensioner (squeak stopped for 2 or 3 more days) and, finally the belt. Squeak has stopped for almost three years now. So, in my case, maybe it was a combination of all three items causing their own problems.

I took a scotchbrite pad to the tensioner pulley this morning. That seemed to be where it was coming from. Leaving for work in a minute, sowwe'll see how it works. Thanks guys.

Mine squeaks when it's really humid or raining out but if it's dry it's quiet. Not sure the brand but I'll look when I get a chance

After scrubbing the tensioner it squeaked a little till the engine warmed up, then quit. Much better than it was, I did a little tinkering with it this afternoon trying to get it to stop completely.

Sounds weird but sometimes I don't mind the squeaking b/c it just sounds cool like an old truck. If your truck was totally quiet it would be like a Prius lol. I couldn't stand it squeaking all the time though. Good luck

Yep. Threw a new Motorcraft tensioner on mine, and Gates belt, and not so much as a peep out of her anymore
