I have a 2006 f-250 super duty with a 6.0 and auto trans. I was pulling a trailer with about 5k of vehicle on the trailer.
Problem : after a long trip on good roads,i had to pull a steep hill. climbing the hill i did not shift into tow mode and all of a sudden my engine raced up to about 3k rpms and seemed to either shift to low or ( maybe ?) the Governor may engaged ?
Anyway I made it to the top of the grade and it seemed to be fine from there.
Question Is the trans broken, or did the computer maybe try to protect the trans ? It seems to work fine still, but has anyone ever had this happen ?
I do realize how stupid I was....lol
More info. Miles on the trans? Condition and level of the trans fluid? When was the fluid and filter last serviced? Any blinking lights? Did you happen to notice the trans temp, if yours has that gauge?
Id first pull any trouble codes of the computer. If no saved codes show up then have a reputable trans shop do a diagnostic on it both electrical and hydraulic (pressure check(s)). If it does need a rebuild catch it now so all your replacing is consumable parts vs hard parts. This is general trans service procedures.
Mark K will likely chime in here if Im off base.
The down shift was pretty severe, although no warning lights or noise, except if if did down shift, it went straight to low low. Just felt like a big loss of pulling power. and the rpm stayed up at 3k.
It would be great if this was just my ignorant choice not to shift to the tow mode...

There's nothing ignorant about that, there is no requirement that you engage tow/haul mode when you're pulling a trailer. You can't hurt anything by towing in normal mode, it's more of a preference thing than anything else. It will hold gears longer and shift at higher RPMs in tow mode, which most prefer when they're towing.

A downshift to 3000 rpm is not low low. That is a normal rpm when clI'm bing a steep grade with a load.
