I need to install a half floor from the small hump forward, what is the best way to weld that in, ie butt weld, lap, flange? Also, what supports the floor underneath , like around where the opening is for the transcover.
I'm getting a different cab for my 48 soon and have some patching to do on the floor also. I thnk if you go with the lap type patch then you have a small area where they overlap that could rust out again. Dirt and whatnot getting caught in there. I plan on a butt weld type patch, tacking it place and then filling in. If you purchased patch panels aren't they formed around the trans cover area? Those ribs and stuff stamped into the panel would give support. This will be my first time patching a floor the right way so it's a learn as I go thing.Iv'e heard that you shouldn't weld it all at once, but do small spots at a time. Giving the metal time to cool down so it doesn't warp from the heat. The 18 guage stuff is pretty tough so I don't plan on using the patch panels that are available from vendors. Good luck.
Well I went to buy a floor and I am getting the shipping shaft. Found a couple nice ones for $80-$119 from vendors but they play the $150 shipping game. I have bought larger items with free shipping. Jegs is a good vendor for free shipping, summit too. I am not going to pay close to $300 for a floor.
Back in the day we would go get an old fridge or washing machine and cut the sheetmetal off it. Not sure I would do that now. I plan on a chunk of 18 guage big enough for my patch. A lot cheaper I think. But then there is still the time to shape it and all that. Get creative with the ballpeen hammer and something to pound into to form your ribs or lips. I thought I would cut a chunk of pipe in two and use that to form the ribs if I need them. Just an idea I've been mulling over, and over, and over. I gues when it comes time I'll figure something out. And so will you. Have a nice day.
