I hear they can cause a lot of problems burning out starters but I found "Shorty" style headers that conserve much more room going past the starter. Would like to know if this would work out for me

Headers are the 1st thing that should be done to a FE to get better power. Outside of the obvious Complete tune-up that is. Use the search engine top o' this page and you'll find a zillion threads about them.
