I keep burning up glow plugs. Why are they going bad every few mo. I can change them and they work fine for a few mo. I just checked all the ones on the driver side of truck with a test light and they were all bad. I stopped there deciding that I would change them all.
I read somewhere on here that timing could affect have this affect but I cant find the thread. I changed the pump and lined it up with the existing timing marks. It seemed a little retarded so I advanced a little bit to make sound like it did before I changed the pump but I could be wrong.
Would this mean the timing is retarded or advanced to far. I really don't think its to far advanced because it doesn't have that rattle some have where there cold.
factory gp controller? it may need replacing. as one of the faults is to turn on randomly check all connections including the grounds cuz when the power is momentarily disconnected to the controller it can heat for four seconds even if the engine is warm, this can overheat gps, or stuck or sticking relay you must use zd9 gp's my controller went wonky new one works great.
read this whole thread and follow the testing procedures before installing your (motorcraft! ) glow plugs so you don't burn 'em up if the controller is faulty. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-tutorial.html
it's said really advanced engine timing (above 10* BTDC) can burn up glow plugs.......but you'd know it if she was that far advanced.she'd have extreme clatter and sound horrible.......like one of them 6. oh no's.
I have a hard time believing that advanced timing will eat GPs.. but i cant prove otherwise. The wivestale as i heard it states that that it doesnt burn them, it erodes them, as in will eat the tips off of them.
