I just saw a guy in town the other day that had a mid 80's(87'ish) tailgate on a late 70's truck. Whether it was a direct fit or not, I don't know, but looks like it can at least be done. The 80 model looks like it would be the same as the 79.

Fit I do believe, will the body lines line up, no. 73-79 fit great and the body lines work a lot better than a 80's and up.

1980/82 F100/350 tailgate is not the same as 1973/79, 1983/86 or 1987/91. And...the 1980/91 tailgates do not look the same as 1973/79.

While 1980/82 might fit 1973/79, the 1980/82 R/L latches and tailgate supports (scissors) are a one piece assembly. 1973/79: These are separate parts.

The hinges are also different. 1973/79 is one type (D3TZ-9943018-A R/L same), 1980/86 is different (E0TZ-9943018-A Right / E0TZ-9943019-A Left).

1987/91 hinges are different again (E7TZ-99430B38-A Right / E7TZ-99430B39-A Left).

1983/86 & 1987/91 use R & L specific cables to support the tailgate. 1983/86 cables are different than 1987/91.
