Coming home last night I was going up a hill behind an idiot driver who decided at the last minute to turn left and not get all the way into the turn lane. So after swerving a little to avoid him I stomped on the long pedal and noticed what appeared to be a good bit of black smoke. More then I would say I have seen my truck put out before. I was a little concerned so I started searching the forums but most of the smoky threads came with poor performance. My truck is running pretty damn well. With the exception of an AIS that maybe has 15,000 on the filter everything is stock 2000 7.3 LBCC 161,600. Maybe it was just the time of night and the headlights behind me made the smoke look more significant but is there anything I should check? Oil and fuel filter just changed at the 160,000 mark.
Might check your turbo boots for a loose one . Mine came loose going up a hill with my foot to the metal. Drove it for a while and had black smoke.. Do you have boost gage?
Yeah. I am still getting just under 20 max which is normal for me. I did a boost leak check back in the summer but maybe I will get my PVC contraption out again.
Check your EBPV and line. Mine dose that in Wyoming when I loge it down. I'm going to change mine and see what happens. You r boost sounds good for stock.

Yeah I only removed the red wastegate line. I a sitting on a F6 chip and haven't gotten around to installing it yet. When you say check the EBPV and line do you mean remove it and check for build up or is there another way to test it?
You need to remove it, and also check the sensor to the map and baro pressure. Mine was high when I had a friend check it. So I have to order up a new sensor. It tells the PCM how much fuel to deliver when you step of the pedal. Mine's been off every once in a while and when I'm at high elevation.
At night time with headlights behind you, it is fairly common/normal to see a haze come out when you punch it. Even in the stock tune. My truck has always done this, much before any modifications.
Maybe try to get a video somehow? Have someone you know drive behind you and have a passenger video tape.
Your boost is right on par for stock. If it is an abnormal amount, I would say it is injector or HPO related.
What Justin said. The mild haze that's invisible during the day looks thick when illuminated by headlights. Absent some other reason for concern, I wouldn't worry about it.
Agreed with the above posts. I'll also add that it's possible in that situation that you may also have been lugging the crap out of the engine when this happened being on the brakes the mashing the skinny pedal
I agree with all the above posts but I have noticed more smoke then usual and when I checked my EBPV it did seem higher then it should. Haven't changed it yet but do know that it dose smoke from time to time way more then it use to when getting going. I guess I got to order one and see if I'm right on this.
