I have a 2004 Excursion with 40,000 miles(just turned). I took it to the delarship last week for and oil change before we went on a trip. That night when were comming home I notice a little smoke backing up the driveway thought nothing of it. That next moring got up went to go get bagels for the trip with no smoke at all, then came back and hitched up to our toy hauler 12,000LB. Went up the freeway on ramp and holy .... There was tons of black smoke dumping out for 10 seconds. Got on the freeway and I was fine till stepped on the gas and little puffs of smoke came out for a second or two. We got there to out vaction place a little over 8,000 ft. Around town it smoke a little. Then yesterday when when left there is on huge hill to get out of the valley. Of course it dumbed out black smoke. Also when we let of the throtle the truck made a agg, agg every time followed by more smoke. Does anny bodie know for a good code reader the trucks check engine lite came on after 2 hours on the road. If anny one could help that would be great,
Thanks in advance,
Nick
Well I know this is going to sound wild but I will say it anyway. Do you have a boost guage? Although I have never heard of this happening, is it possible the vgt actuator became air locked after the oil change and the unison ring is not moving the turbo and providing boost? Or the vgt itself gave up the ghost. The black smoke for 10 seconds is liken to how a stock 6.0 behaves if you unplug the vgt solinoid, so you may also want to check the connection there going into the turbo. Maybe the connector or a wire was damaged durring the oil change.
Check to make sure the oil level is not over full. Also look and see if any connectors were knocked loose on the top of the engine (EGT, EOT etc). Check for any restrictions in the air intake.
Sounds like the VGT turbo is sticking or actuator solenoid is not woking properly or EGR valve is sticking.
Your truck is still under the 5/100K warranty so this would only cost you the $100 deductible for repairs.

Where exactly can I locate this connector? Is there a picture I can see somewhere?
The VGT vanes could be sticking and in need of cleaning or replacement.

Connector is on the VGT control solenoid located on the VGT. Go to the 6.0 tech folder and click on the 6.0 Bible, there are pictures in it.
If you unplug the VGT actuator you'll have total loss of turbo control not to mention the truck will be very laggy to the point of dangerous. It's BAD for your turbo to do that.
